A South Florida nonprofit balances urgent kitchen renovations with its 20-year tradition of honoring people experiencing homelessness on their birthdays

The Caring Place at Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers is calling on South Florida residents to support two efforts unfolding side by side this month: a critical kitchen renovation backed by a $50,000 matching challenge, and the organization's 20th annual Bombastic Birthday Celebration on Wednesday, June 24. Together, the two initiatives reflect the nonprofit's dual mission of meeting basic needs and restoring dignity to men and women experiencing homelessness across Miami-Dade County and Broward.

The matching challenge, committed by Friends of The Caring Place, will double every dollar donated up to $50,000 toward urgent kitchen repairs. According to the organization, the renovation requires more than $200,000 in equipment, materials, and labor to be completed before the summer season, when demand for meals typically intensifies. The deadline to meet the match is Tuesday, June 30. Community members can give directly at caringplace.org.

A Kitchen Renovation Tied to a Growing Need

The Caring Place reports that the number of homeless and food-insecure individuals arriving at its doors continues to rise daily. Completing the kitchen renovation is essential to sustaining the organization's feeding program at full strength through the busy summer months. With more than $200,000 in total costs, the matching challenge represents one of the most significant fundraising pushes the nonprofit has launched in recent memory, and leadership has emphasized that timing is critical given the steady increase in demand for hot meals, shelter, and basic services across South Florida.

Two Decades of Celebrating Overlooked Birthdays

While the kitchen campaign addresses immediate operational needs, the Bombastic Birthday Celebration scheduled for June 24 reflects the organization's long-running commitment to dignity. From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., both the Miami campus at 2020 NW 1st Avenue and the Hollywood campus at 2056 Scott Street will host festive meals, cupcakes with candles, birthday gifts, clothing items, hygiene kits, and handmade cards for hundreds of men and women whose birthdays often go unrecognized. Reverend Ray Taltoan will serve as guest speaker at the Miami event, and Pastor Michelle Allen of New Jerusalem Disciples Church will speak at the Broward campus.

“This tradition began in 2006, thanks to Marilyn Brummitt,” said Antonio Villasuso, President of The Caring Place. “She recognized that many experiencing homelessness hadn't celebrated their birthdays in years. Her heart was to remind them they are not forgotten. Through events like this, we want every guest to know they are seen, loved, and valued. Our goal is to offer more than just a celebration — we want to offer hope, help, and a pathway to a new life. These outreaches are intentional invitations into transformation.”

Presenting sponsors for the celebration include the Key Biscayne Community Foundation and the Clair Family. INTI.Q Solutions and the Deering Family are providing cupcakes at both centers, and Chick-fil-A Miramar and Flamingo is sponsoring dinner at the Hollywood campus. Community members can sponsor a birthday gift at caringplace.org/birthday.

The Caring Place has served South Florida since 1922, providing food, shelter, clothing, long-term regeneration programs, education, job training, and health services to nearly 1,000 people each day across Miami-Dade and Broward.
