Lunch and Learn workshops empower seniors with tools to detect and prevent fraud and scams
As fraud and scams continue to surge nationwide, District 5 County Commissioner Eileen Higgins is taking action close to home. Commissioner Higgins has teamed up with the County’s Consumer Protection Division to launch a series of Lunch and Learn workshops across District 5. These events are specifically designed to educate and protect seniors—the group most frequently targeted by scammers.
“Protecting our seniors from fraud is about awareness and equipping them with the tools they need to stay safe in an increasingly digital world” said Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “We’re committed to ensuring they feel empowered and supported every step of the way.”
So far, more than 100 senior residents in low-income housing communities have participated in five sessions, with additional workshops planned in the coming weeks. These hands-on, educational gatherings aim to empower residents with knowledge that could prevent devastating financial loss.
Education is the first line of defense
The Lunch and Learn workshops tackle a range of scams, including identity theft, phishing schemes, and fraudulent solicitations. With the Federal Trade Commission reporting over $12.5 billion in consumer fraud losses last year—a 25% spike from 2023—awareness is more critical than ever.
“Prevention is key because once an identity is stolen or money is lost, recovery can be incredibly difficult,” said Commissioner Higgins. “Our workshops are making a real difference in helping seniors recognize red flags before it’s too late.”
Experts from the County’s Consumer and Neighborhood Protection Division provide tailored advice, answer questions, and share up-to-date fraud trends affecting Miami-Dade residents.
“I’ve been scammed before, and it made me feel helpless,” said Maria Rivera, a resident of Haley Sofge Towers. “After attending the workshop, I finally feel like I know how to protect myself. I’m grateful Commissioner Higgins is doing this for us.”

Local resources make a big impact
Each workshop offers practical takeaways, such as never sharing personal information with unknown callers or via text, securing accounts with two-factor authentication, and the importance of reporting suspicious activity and scams immediately. Seniors are also encouraged to monitor financial statements and credit reports regularly.
