Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. passengers must provide a REAL ID or approved alternative for domestic flights
The TSA has announced that as of May 7, 2025, all U.S travelers older than 18 are required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved form of identification at airport checkpoints.
The change was proposed in the 2005 REAL ID Act, which aimed to boost national security with stricter standards for state-issued IDs.
What is REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a requirement that marks authenticated identification with a gold or black star in the upper right corner. To obtain one, you must visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office with documents that can verify your identity, Social Security number, and residency.

Alternatives to REAL ID
If you don’t possess a REAL ID yet, you’re not the only one. Here are several other forms of identification that are acceptable for domestic air travel:
- U.S. passport or passport card
- Border crossing card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (FAST, Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS)
- Permanent resident card
- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
- An acceptable federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe issued photo ID, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs)
- Foreign government-issued passport
- HSPD-12 PIV card
- Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card or Canadian provincial driver’s license
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- Transportation worker identification credential
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
Children under 18 traveling with an adult with a REAL ID are not required to present identification.
Getting or renewing a U.S. passport
If you opt for a passport instead of a REAL ID, here’s how to apply:
For first-time applicants:
- Complete Form DS-11, available online or at passport acceptance facilities.
- Gather proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., birth certificate) and a valid photo ID.
- Provide a passport photo that meets official requirements.
- Pay the applicable fees: $130 for the passport book, $30 for the passport card, and a $35 execution fee.
- Submit your application in person at a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office.
For renewals:
You can renew your passport by mail if it was issued within the last 15 years and you are older than 16. Here are the steps you should follow:
- Complete Form DS-0082.
- Include your most recent passport, a new passport photo, and payment for the renewal fee.
- Mail your application to the appropriate address listed on the form.
Processing times vary, so plan accordingly. Routine service can take 4-6 weeks, while expedited service (for an additional fee) takes 2-3 weeks.
Tips for smooth travel
- Make sure your identification is REAL ID-compliant or that you have an acceptable alternative before making travel plans.
- If you’re unsure about your ID status, arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight to allow time for additional screening if necessary.
- Visit the TSA’s official website for the most up-to-date information on acceptable forms of identification and travel requirements.
