At the same time, Miami-Dade County is reinforcing accountability through a comprehensive audit led by Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez focused on Disabled Person Parking Permits. This initiative is one of the most extensive compliance efforts in the County’s history, aimed at protecting seniors, veterans, and residents with legitimate mobility challenges.
To date, more than 33,000 applications have been reviewed. While most permits have been confirmed as valid, a significant number required further verification. Approximately 2,000 permits have already been cancelled due to improper issuance or lack of eligibility validation, with additional reviews ongoing.
Recent enforcement actions conducted in partnership with local authorities identified cases involving falsified, expired, or unlawfully used permits. These findings highlight the importance of safeguarding systems designed to support those who rely on them most.
Dariel Fernandez emphasized that the audit is about protecting the integrity of a system that thousands of residents depend on daily. Under Florida law, fraudulent use of disabled parking permits may result in fines, potential jail time, and disqualification from future eligibility, reinforcing the seriousness of misuse.
