Keep your summer fun essentials organized and easy to find in your garage with these handy DIY projects
The long, lazy days of summer are finally here. Every part of the house is piled high with boxes and bins, household tools and equipment, sports gear, and more. But don't worry, organizing your messy garage and turning it into a neat space you can be proud of is easier than you think. These DIY projects are nifty, fun, and simple enough to get done with enough time to go for a beach vacay or family road trip!
Here are some of our favorite DIY Projects:
De-clutter and donate
Start by cleaning out your garage and donating anything you don’t use anymore. For most people, the garage is usually the place where everything ends up. Remember that toy your kid was looking for that you said you’d fix? It’s been in a forgotten corner of your garage for years. The sleeping bags you need for your family vacation? Behind the pile of gardening tools.
Over time, these things pile up and clog a lot of room. So, your first order of business should be to donate the things you don’t need and store the things you want to keep in boxes. A good way to know what to get rid of is if it’s been collecting dust or if you haven’t used it for at least 7 months.
Section off your garage into zones
Now that everything is cleaned out, you can start separating your garage space into different zones. Define these zones based on different priorities. So, you can have a car zone where you have an empty space and different tools, a lawn equipment zone where you keep your gardening gloves and lawnmower, and other zones for different uses.
Arranging your garage this way will help you save on your time looking for things when you need them. It will also give you clear rules and a layout for how to go forward with organizing your garage space.
Storage DIY projects to keep things off the floor
Even though you have everything in boxes in designated zones, they’re still taking up a lot of floor space. Luckily, there are DIY projects for making it look neat and tidy. Build and install shelves for each of your garage’s zones to make better use of the space.
Take a large 2 x 6 block of wood and brackets to build a simple shelf. But don't stop here. Add a few bins for extra storage to the mix. Label each bin with a sticky note or paper tape with a name for the contents inside or to indicate what its contents will be used for. For instance, you can have a box for things you need for traveling, paint supplies, kids’ outdoor activities, and different gardening tools for each season.
