It’s never too late to get back into the sports, you can join a community league or enjoy a sport on your own at any age!
When we think of playing sports, we imagine our school playground or after-school extracurricular activities where we achieved records and milestones. We reminisce the days when we played for a national college league or national athletics team.
But what many people don’t realize is that participating in sports as an adult can help them stay fit and achieve your long-term health and fitness goals. Here are a few basic ways to get back into sports as an adult:
There’s no need to rush
Don't rush back into an old sport — take it easy. Injuries are a major concern for anyone considering taking up a new sport or returning to one they haven't done in a while. Slow and steady wins the race, so don't try to take on too much at the same time or risk getting injured.
Give your body some time to adjust to the new schedule. Add a supporting activity to your routine to help your body recover and get into shape for the sport you want to play. Yoga, joint-strengthening exercises, and warm-up stretches loosen up your muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce the risk of injury.
Don’t try to compete with your younger self
As your involvement in the sport grows, it's important to keep your expectations realistic. Don't try to match or beat the records you set as a college junior or high school student. You had different ability, agility, and endurance then. There are several ways in which adult athletes outperform their childhood counterparts, but it takes time and effort to build back that stamina.
Join a local community league
You can find a variety of sports teams and leagues at your local community and fitness centers, from a casual kickball league to a competitive tennis league. Make sure to check out their website or ask around to see if there are any organized sports programs for adults in your neighborhood.
Choose a sport that you enjoy on your own
Not into the idea of joining a team? No problem! Many sports don't require a team. Consider the types of exercises you can perform on your own, after work, or on the weekends to help you stay in shape. There's a wide variety of sports you can participate in, such as golf, track and field, boxing, cycling, and swimming. Be adventurous and don't hesitate to think outside the box when choosing a challenge!
Involve your loved ones in the effort
What better way to spend a dreary Sunday afternoon than to head to the beach and play a game of volleyball with your family? You can even have a small baseball matchin your own garden, neighborhood park, or on the local sports. Get your friends together for a game of basketball or go cycling along Miami beach – anything that gets your adrenaline flowing!
