Summertime means that your skincare routine needs a major overhaul and upgrade because not only will the weather be hotter and often more humid, but it will also require you to focus on added protection. The sticker, hotter weather, harsher sun rays, and other factors make it absolutely vital that you prepare your skin for summer in the following ways:

Add a gentle cleanser to your AM and PM routine

In cooler months you can sometimes skip using a cleanser in the morning, but as summer approaches and skincare gets put off and skin tends to get greasy, sticky, and shiny, you want to work with a smooth canvas.

It’s important that you add a gentle cleanser to your routine, both in the morning and at night, to ensure there’s no sebum, dirt, or leftover product clogging your pores or forming a layer over your skin. You don’t need to go in with a harsh product, just one that gets the job done. Find one based on your skin type for more effective results.

Swap to lightweight, water-based products

As the seasons change, so should your skincare products. The same products from winter may be too heavy, greasy, and suffocating in the heat of the summer, which is why you need to swap them out. Instead, look for lightweight water-based products that won’t clog your pores or leave a greasy cast but will still hydrate and moisturize your skin.

Water and gel-based products are much more absorbent and sometimes gentler on the skin too. Look for other hydrating and cooling ingredients such as aloe vera, tea tree oil which can help with breakouts and inflammation when considering your skincare.

Double down on sun protection in the summer

While wearing SPF is necessary all year long, you should double down in the summer, especially if you’re outdoors, like at the beach. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, and a higher-protection sunblock when in direct sun exposure to protect your skin and health in the long run. Without adequate sun protection, you run the risk of burns, cell damage, and a lot of other issues down the line.

With that being said, please also remember never to go tanning. We know you love that healthy summer glow and tan, but it’s not worth laying in the sun unprotected and exposed.

Tanning unnecessarily exposes you to high-intensity rays and causes severe damage to your skin barrier, may lead to burns, and it poses serious health risks in the long-run.

Exfoliate with a gentle physical or chemical product

Along with all these steps, add a gentle exfoliant to your routine as well. You can choose a physical exfoliant or a chemical one but skip the microbeads. Instead, opt for a good quality exfoliant that will remove dead skin cells and improve cell turnover for a healthy glow and smoother skin.

A pro-tip would be to adapt your makeup routine for summer months too and switch to lightweight, breathable products like water-based foundations and concealers, BB creams, and tints.
