Miami International Airport keeps setting records in 2022

Miami International Airport has had a busy few years, setting records annually since 2019

The Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, recently announced that Miami International Airport had more passengers than any other airport in Florida in 2022.

Over 50.6 million travelers used MIA in 2022, breaking the previous record established in 2019 by nearly 10%, as per the press release. Miami International Airport easily outperformed Orlando International Airport's record of 50.1 million, making it the busiest airport in Sunshine State.

Miami International Airport's record-breaking streak continues

Miami International Airport has seen several all-time highs over the years. The number of domestic passengers at MIA reached a record-setting 29.3 million in 2018, up from 23.5 million in 2019, and the airport served a total of 21.3 million foreign passengers in 2022, also an all-time high.

Passenger traffic at MIA increased by 35 percent from 2021 to 2022, from 37.3 million to 40.3 million. This happened while the aviation industry was still healing from the COVID pandemic era. By 2022, MIA had handled 2.7 million tons of freight, matching its previous record established in 2021. This included 2.2 million tons of foreign freight and 500,000 tons of local cargo.

How MIA managed to stay on top through the pandemic

American Airlines, which uses MIA as a hub, and its regional affiliate, Envoy, which served 31.8 million passengers in 2022, were major contributors to the airport's recovery from the pandemic. Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, all budget airlines, have recently set up shop at MIA and are presently the 2nd, 4th, and 8th busiest passenger airlines there in terms of seat capacity.

In 2022, MIA had its busiest year, adding 15 overseas flights, including six to the Caribbean, five to South America, three to Europe, and one to Canada.
