June: A month to celebrate the men who shape us– including ourselves

Honoring father figures: A June tribute to the men who uplift, protect, and inspire

June holds a special place in my heart. It’s my birthday month, and it’s also the month we celebrate Father’s Day — a day that often gets overlooked or understated. But this year, let's take a moment to truly recognize and honor the men who show up, who lead with love, and who inspire by example.

This article is for all the incredible men who have stepped into the role of a father figure, whether or not they share your blood. You don’t have to be a biological father to make a powerful impact. Sometimes, the most meaningful guidance and protection come from brothers, mentors, friends, or those who simply choose to love and uplift others.

I dedicate this article to two extraordinary men in my life:

  • Dorian Liriano, my brother and father figure, whose strength, guidance, and unwavering support helped shape the woman I am today.
  • Jorge Coello, a Cuban-American veteran and lifelong advocate for those who have served this country. His strength, dedication, and heart have made him a brother figure in my life.

To every man who sacrifices, protects, teaches, and uplifts — you are seen, you are valued, and you are appreciated.

You matter, too

But I want to say something we don’t say enough: you matter, too.

Being a man, a protector, or a father figure does not mean you should forget about yourself. Too often, men are taught to give endlessly without pausing to refill their own cup. But self-care is not weakness — it’s wisdom. When you care for yourself, you are better able to care for others.

Honor yourself this month

So this June, I encourage you to:

  • Get a fresh haircut.
  • Go for a walk or hit the gym.
  • Treat yourself to a solo dinner or a day just for you.
  • Put on your best outfit, your favorite cologne, and look in the mirror with pride.
  • Say, “Thank you for being an amazing man.”

Being a man means loving yourself

When you show up for yourself, you show others how to show up, too. Confidence doesn’t come from ego — it comes from self-respect.

Being a man means loving yourself enough to nurture your mind, body, and spirit. It means leading by example, not just through strength, but through grace, care, and pride in your presence.

As I celebrate my birthday this month, I do so with gratitude for the male figures (Dorian Liriano) who poured into my life with wisdom , encouragement, and love. Because of them, I stand strong in who I am today — a woman shaped by empowerment, resilience, and purpose. Thank You

To every man reading this

Be the light. Be the inspiration. Be the man you once needed. And above all — Make yourself a priority. Take care of yourself. Don’t let yourself go. The world needs your strength — and your softness, too.
