Cristina Rivera Correa was appointed as a County Court Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and is the first female graduate of the Florida International University College of Law.
Cristina Rivera Correa was recently appointed as a County Court Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Court. The 35 year old took her oath at the office of Kiwanis of Little Havana headquarters, where she has been a volunteer since 2003.
The oath was administered by John Couriel Sr’s son, Supreme Court Justice John Couriel, who is also a friend of Judge Rivera Correa. In order to respect social distancing guidelines and to protect those present from exposure to the Coronavirus, the event was limited in guests and followed social distancing rules.
Present at the event was Judge Rivera Correa’s husband, Nick Correa, and their children: one-year-old twins Marcel and Margot and four-year-old Colette, who led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance during the ceremony. Judge Rivera Correa’s mother, Cristina Agudo, and brother, Luis Rivera, were also present for her big day.
Family members that couldn’t attend the in-person gathering joined via Zoom. This includes her father, Raul Rivera, who joined from Puerto Rico, and Judge Rivera Correa’s in-laws and cousins from Miami.
Correa practiced law for 10 years prior to taking the bench. She was first an Assistant State Attorney and then an Assistant School Board Attorney, both in Miami Dade. Correa graduated from Florida International University (FIU) College of Law in 2009, where she has now become the first female graduate to be appointed to the bench. Correa is filling the vacant seat previously held by Judge Zachary James.
Judge Rivera Correa has been associated with Kiwanis of Little Havana since 2003. She has volunteered in the children’s summer camp, as well as with food distribution events for the needy, and fundraising efforts.
