Steward Health Care to provide Physician-Led Care to the Community

Steward Health Care System, LLC (Steward) made a huge expansion recently with its acquisition of five hospitals in South Florida from Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC). The hospitals that are now the newest members of Steward Health are North Shore Medical Center, Coral Gables Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, Palmetto General Hospital in Miami-Dade County, and Florida Medical Center in Broward County.

The company was founded by CEO Ralph de la Torre, MD, who grew up in Florida and is the son of Cuban immigrants. His goal has always been driven by his passion to provide the best care possible for all the communities served in the United States and internationally. To do this, he employs the physician-led model, which gives patients compassionate and value-based care.

“Steward Health Care takes a physician’s approach to patient care. Everything we do is about improving our patients’ well-being, which requires not only tailoring care to each patient but also learning from and engaging with every community we serve.”

These new hospitals will operate under the leadership of Dr. Sanjay Shetty, MD, Steward’s President of North America. The doctor has previously held various leadership roles within the organization and has been an essential part of the success of Steward Health Care as it dealt with the current Covid-19 pandemic and the expansion of the organization. Already he has been working to see how to best serve the needs of the South Florida communities.

He explained, “Steward understands that combatting the resurgence of the COVID pandemic in South Florida is our most urgent and immediate priority. Already, we have begun to redeploy PPE, ventilators, and other vital supplies needed for the care of COVID patients from our other facilities throughout the country to hospitals in this market. As a physician-led hospital system, we are committed to providing all our patients with access to critical supplies and treatments, and we will work hard to build trust and ensure the best possible outcomes by listening to and learning from our partners in South Florida.”

Steward Health is a leader and innovator in the field. They now have 44 hospitals worldwide that serve over 12.3 million patients in the United States, Colombia and Malta. They have over 5,500 clinicians and 43,000 health care professionals that make it all happen. When seeking care from any Steward Health Care facility, patients are expected to experience high quality care at a sustainable cost. The offices operate on a Physician-led model and focus on providing care that is personalized and positive for all aspects of a patient’s life. It was founded in 2010, and based in Dallas. Currently is the largest physician-owned health care network with hospitals in operation in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Malta, and Colombia.

In this time of crisis where Covid-19 cases continue to surge, it is exciting that there will be additional care options for the communities of South Florida.
