Oscar Feldenkreis pays tribute to his father’s legacy this Father’s Day

This Father's Day, Perry Ellis CEO, Oscar Feldenkreis, shares a heartfelt tribute to his late father, George Feldenkreis, who built Cubavera and his character

For Oscar Feldenkreis, Father's Day is no ordinary holiday. It’s a deeply personal occasion marked by memory, gratitude, and an enduring bond with the man who helped shape his life and career, his father, George Feldenkreis.

George, the Cuban-born visionary who founded Perry Ellis International and built Cubavera into a symbol of Latino pride and family tradition, passed away on February 20, 2025. But his presence is still deeply felt in every stitch of the iconic guayaberas and in every principle that guides Oscar's leadership.

“My father was my best friend, my mentor, my hero,” Oscar told Calle Ocho News in an exclusive interview. “His passing left a vacuum in my life that can never be filled, but I’m blessed with a large, supportive family and a mission to carry his legacy forward.”

Leading by example: Lessons that last a lifetime

Oscar’s journey with his father began early, side by side in the family business. From age 13, he traveled the world with George, learning everything from sourcing materials to negotiating with international partners. But the most valuable lessons weren’t found in factories or boardrooms.

“He taught me to work hard, to be humble, and to always protect the integrity of your name,” Oscar recalled. “He didn’t hand me anything; I had to earn it. He said, ‘If your competitor is working 40 hours, you work 50.’ That mindset never left me.”

Even now, Oscar applies those lessons daily as the CEO of Perry Ellis International, leading with a quiet strength rooted in humility, discipline, and unshakable family values.

Culture woven into every stitch

Nowhere is the spirit of George Feldenkreis more evident than in Cubavera’s signature guayaberas. These classic shirts, worn proudly by Latino fathers and sons alike, have become cultural touchstones for celebrations like Father’s Day.

“The guayabera is more than a shirt, it’s a symbol of identity, pride, and generational connection,” Oscar said. “Father and son wearing matching or similar guayaberas, that’s a tradition we cherish. It’s a beautiful way to honor our roots.”

As part of this year’s Father’s Day celebration, Cubavera is offering a special in-store experience at its Dolphin Mall location on June 13, and 14. With any $75 purchase or no minimum for Good Life Rewards Gold Members, shoppers receive complimentary embroidery, turning each garment into a personalized keepsake. Online, promotions run through June 15, including polos and guayaberas starting at $29.99.

These events aren’t just about fashion but about honoring heritage. The brand's new campaign, “El Rey de la Casa,” invites customers and employees alike to share stories of influential father figures using the hashtag #ElReyDeLaCasa.

Oscar Feldenkreis is celebrating fathers, giving back to the community

Beyond business and branding, Oscar carries forward one of his father’s most important teachings: giving back.

“Success isn’t just about making money,” he said. “It’s about sharing what you have, whether financial, time, or energy, and supporting your community. That’s how my father lived, and that’s what I strive to do.”

Oscar said Miami has always been a home and stronghold for Cubavera. “It’s our biggest market. You see people wearing our designs everywhere. There’s no better city to celebrate Father’s Day, wearing something that represents who we are.”

Oscar Feldenkreis' personal tradition of writing Father’s Day cards, handwritten messages of love and appreciation, is a tradition he urges others to embrace. “I’ve kept every card my children gave me. At 65, I still read them, and I cry. That’s what memories are made of.”
