A groundbreaking concert series will bring the acclaimed Miami City Ballet Orchestra from the orchestra pit to center stage, offering South Florida audiences a rare celebration of ballet music under the stars

In a major cultural moment for Miami-Dade County and South Florida’s performing arts community, the Miami City Ballet Orchestra will make its historic on-stage debut during “Ballet Classics Under the Stars,” a special concert event taking place May 29–31 at Sanctuary of the Arts in Coral Gables. The performances represent a unique artistic shift, placing the orchestra itself at the forefront in an immersive musical experience designed to deepen community awareness and appreciation for classical performance arts.

Led by Maestro Gary Sheldon, the program will feature celebrated ballet and orchestral works from legendary composers including Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Alexander Borodin, Georges Bizet, and Samuel Barber. The performances will take place at Sanctuary of the Arts, an intimate venue increasingly recognized for expanding access to arts and cultural programming in South Florida.

A Rare Spotlight on Miami City Ballet Orchestra

Traditionally positioned in the orchestra pit during ballet productions, the Miami City Ballet Orchestra will now become the featured attraction itself, an uncommon format that organizers say allows audiences to fully experience the musical depth behind many of ballet’s most iconic productions.

The concert program includes selections from Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Serenade, and the powerful Polovetsian Dances, giving audiences a sweeping journey through more than a century of classical music history.

“This is the first time the great orchestra will ever perform on stage where the orchestra is featured rather than the dance company,” said Mike Eidson, founder of Sanctuary of the Arts alongside Dr. Margaret Eidson.

A major highlight of the performances will be appearances by Miami City Ballet dancers in specially choreographed pas de deux. Two dancers from Miami City Ballet will perform choreography by Pontus Lidberg to music by Samuel Barber, while dancers from Sanctuary of the Arts’ Choreographic Ensemble will present a Romeo and Juliet pas de deux choreographed by Rafi Maldonado-Lopez and Alice Arja.

The concerts will also showcase featured solo performances by concertmaster and violinist Mei Mei Luo and pianist Francisco Renno, further elevating the event as a landmark collaboration between orchestral and dance artistry.
