Commissioner Eileen Higgins helps pass new legislation that will address and protect the needs of Miami's LGBTQ community

Commissioner Eileen Higgins has made headlines over the years for her outstanding work in Miami, particularly in support of the Miami LGBTQ community. She was the driving force behind the formation of the LGBTQ Advisory Board for Miami-Dade County. She declared October to be Miami-Dade County's LGBTQ History Month. And now, as of June 1, she kicked off Pride Month by pushing for an LGBTQ services assessment in Miami-Dade County.

About the LGBTQ Services Assessment

The LGBTQ services assessment is a golden opportunity to develop data-driven public policy. According to SAVE Executive Director and LGBTQ Advisory Boardmember Orlando Gonzales, it will help them create more inclusive policies.

The study will provide a deeper insight into what the community needs, gaps in policies that need to be filled, and other ways to improve the lives of community members. Once completed, the Mayor will submit a report summarizing the findings and suggesting potential policy changes.

This study is one of the many efforts that Commissioner Eileen Higgins has made to empower and protect Miami's marginalized communities. It recognizes how the LGBTQ community has contributed to Miami's social, cultural, and economic fabric; and will make sure laws and services keep the needs of this community in mind.

Miami-Dade County is home to a vibrant and diverse community of people from all walks of life. This legislation only adds to the policies that make Miami an attractive and safe place for LGBTQ and LGBTQ-friendly residents, tourists, and businesses. It addresses the development of plans and looks at the LGBTQ-friendliness of existing services in Miami.
