What happened, and who was hurt?
According to the FHP, the individual was in the passenger seat of a 2013 Ford Escape that had pulled over for an undisclosed reason in a westbound lane that he thought went south. The SUV was rear-ended by a trucker hauling a 53-foot trailer.
After exiting their respective vehicles, the truck and SUV drivers walked away unharmed at 2 a.m. Tuesday. However, despite Miramar Fire Rescue's best efforts, the passenger ultimately succumbed to their injuries at Aventura Hospital.
Lane closures after the accident
After the collision between the 18-wheeler and the SUV on the south-moving side of the Florida Turnpike, traffic began to back up. Once rush hour started, three lanes were closed for collision cleaning and investigation. By 9 a.m., the road had been reduced to a single lane.
