Baby tests positive for cocaine: Mother arrested in Miami-Dade

In an astonishing incident, Naomi Ruiz, 32-year-old mom, was taken into custody after her baby tests positive for cocaine

A 32-year-old mother from Miami, Naomi Ruiz, was apprehended by the police on January 8, 2025, after her son, a 5-month-old, tests positive for cocaine in his system. The incident came to light when the infant was rushed to the hospital following a fall. During the medical evaluation, doctors conducted some tests which revealed positive for the presence of cocaine in the baby’s system.

The case was further investigated by the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Their inspections included a drug test for Ruiz, which, as it turned out, also returned positive for cocaine. The findings led to her being charged with child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into jail.

During her court appearance, Judge Mindy Glazer appointed a public defender for Ruiz and issued a no-contact order between her and her son. Ruiz informed the court that her mother currently has custody of the child. Judge Glazer asked Ruiz to make a choice between drugs or her baby. She further suggested that she get drug counseling. Eventually, Ruiz was granted pre-trial release with an alternate bond set at $2,500.

Cocaine related cases involving children

The implications of the case are dire for child welfare. What’s more shocking is that a similar incident was reported not long after this one on January 10, 2025. In this case, 35-year-old Tasheika Dennis was taken into custody on multiple charges, including child neglect, grand theft of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and driving with a suspended license.

Authorities stopped Dennis and her mother in Hialeah while they were driving a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe. A search revealed cocaine inside the car, as well as a bag of suspected drugs hidden in Dennis’ tank top.

Dennis’ 11-month-old daughter, born in 2024, was seated in the rear of the vehicle in a child restraint system. Officers noticed the child was not fully alert and called Hialeah Fire Rescue. The child was then taken to a hospital in Miramar for medical evaluation, where it was determined that amphetamine and cannabis were present in her system.

Mindy Glazer was again the appointed judge for this case and reiterated the same statement she had made in Ruiz’s case. She also went on to warn Dennis that if she didn’t clean up her act, the state would find a family to ensure the child is raised in a drug-free environment.
