Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Hispanic Women's Society Network hosted a "Teal Tea Party" to show solidarity in the fight against cervical cancer
In a vibrant display of unity and commitment, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, in collaboration with the Hispanic Women Society Network of the SFLHCC, hosted the "Teal Tea Party" luncheon at the University of Miami on November 17. The lively event aimed to raise awareness for the World Health Organization's Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action.
Teal pledges and powerful women: Sylvester's cervical cancer crusade
Gathering at the Newman Alumni Center's 4th-floor conference room, over 40 influential women from the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce embraced the teal-themed luncheon. Each attendee pledged to educate ten more women about cervical cancer, marking a collective commitment to spreading awareness and combating the disease.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been at the forefront of global efforts to eradicate cervical cancer. The event underscored their dedication to worldwide prevention through vaccination, screening, treatment, and palliative care.
Erin Kobetz, Ph.D., M.P.H., associate director of community outreach and engagement at Sylvester, emphasized the importance of partnerships with local stakeholders. These collaborations aim to address the complex cancer prevention challenges, contributing to Sylvester's global impact in the fight against cervical cancer.
“Sylvester's multi-angle approach offers a comprehensive strategy to address cervical cancer disparities through prevention, treatment, research and community outreach, but our efforts do not end there. They extend globally to the Caribbean and Africa as we engage in community outreach and provide global training for gynecological oncologists. We understand the weight of our mission. We’re working toward a world where our daughters, mothers, sisters, neighbors and friends will live cervical cancer-free.”

Sylvester's stand against cervical cancer goes global
The luncheon coincided with the World Health Organization's third annual Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action. This global initiative spans 194 countries, emphasizing the public health significance of cervical cancer. Sylvester's active participation in raising awareness aligns with its mission to eliminate barriers to healthcare access and combat the disease at both local and global levels.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, cervical cancer claims the lives of approximately 4,000 women in the U.S. each year, with 11,500 new cases diagnosed annually. Globally, it ranks as the fourth most common cancer in women, with 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths reported in 2020.
Cervical cancer, though unique in its preventability and treatability, necessitates equitable access to medical care for effective elimination. The "Teal Tea Party" served as a colorful reminder of the ongoing efforts to make this access a reality for women worldwide.
