Florida Panthers won a game in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time
With overtime (OT) on the line, Panthers are finding ways to shine. Last night marked their first win ever in the Stanley Cup Final. Carter Verhaeghe scored by snapping a wrister 4:27 into overtime, and Florida Panthers rallied to beat Golden Knights in Game 3.
Although Golden Knights still lead the tie by 2-1, Panthers found a way to leverage overtime in their favor. Here’s more to what happened during game 3 on Thursday night.
Hope for Florida Panthers in Stanley Cup Final
Calling themselves “the cats,” Verhaeghe heralded his team, saying, “We have whatever lives we have, but it’s awesome.” He exclaimed that their team doesn’t have a quitter behavior, and that’s what’s so great about them. This was Verhaeghe’s 4th career playoff OT goal.
The Panthers, on the other hand, are at 7-0 during these overtime playoffs, which means they’re winning more during these extra sessions than in regulation. Mathew Tkachuk tied last night’s game with 2:13 in regulation. He said that they’re not sure how they’re going to get there, but he is confident that the team will put everything into reaching there.
With Tkachuk giving Panthers a chance, Florida won its first title-series match in 7 tries. They fended off a power play for overtime. Tkachuk provided Verhaeghe with some traffic so he could walk in and shoot back into the net. He shared that he was so happy he went just in time.
Panthers regaining confidence
With game 4 scheduled for Saturday night, Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice said that the team has regained confidence. All of his teams have been 19-7 in OT games during his career.
Adin Hill had 20 saves to his name for Vegas, but he lost by the only shot during overtime. Sergei Bobrovsky saved 25 shots for Florida. On top of that, Brandon Montour scored for Panthers, pulling Bobrovsky down to 2-1 in the 3rd for defenceman.
Tkachuk’s goal breathed new life into the fans after Gustav Forsling was sent off for tripping with only 11.2 seconds to go. The fans were angry and nervous.
Despite the odds, Florida has statistical hope. 11 teams out of 55 rallied to win the trophy in the past. It may be improbable, but it’s not impossible. The Florida Panthers have many reasons to be optimistic about winning the trophy.
