Think about the best TV shows of the past few decades, and most of them probably have cities such as New York as a backdrop, but there are many great shows that were filmed in Miami as well. Miami TV shows are among the most popular in the world since 1984.
Here are our top five picks of Miami TV shows filmed in Miami
1. Dexter (2006-2013)
First on our list is Dexter, based on a novel series in which it is revealed that he is possessed by an actual demon. The TV show ditched the original concept and ran with the story of a serial killer slaying other serial killers in Miami. The first few episodes of Dexter were shot in Magic City, although most of the series was shot in Long Beach, California, to mimic Miami.
The Miami TV show begins with Dexter (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter pattern analyst working for the Miami Metro Police (by day), and a serial killer (by night) who only kills bad guys can be seen motoring along Ocean Drive with the backdrop of South Beach’s gorgeous art deco. Things get interesting when the dead body of a prostitute is discovered. While his murderous compulsion is intended to be good, the dead bodies (of bad guys) start piling up, and with a serial killer on the prowl, things get interesting.
2. CSI: Miami (2002-2012)
Starring David Caruso as detective Horatio Caine, one of the most meme-fied TV characters of all time, CSI: Miami is a great option for police/crime drama enthusiasts. The whole CSI franchise is a classic, and they’re lucky to have four series and a total of 36 seasons to watch! CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the original program in the CBS franchise, was set in Las Vegas, while CSI: NY and CSI: Cyber were set in New York and Washington, DC, respectively. CSI: Miami was the franchise’s first straight spin-off, following the CSI unit of the fictitious Miami-Dade Police Department.
3. Burn Notice (2007-2013)
For those of you who do not know, a “Burn Notice” is a document that essentially informs spy agencies that a source or an agent has been sacked. As in, “burned” or no longer affiliated with any particular intelligence organization. The Miami TV show “Burn Notice” follows the exciting life of Michael Weston (Jeffrey Donovon) as he outsmarts bad guys with his wit and CIA-esque training. The private investigator, along with his team, gives new meaning to breathing the 305.
4. Ballers (2015-2019)
Dwayne, “The Rock” Johnson has effectively shaped his career as an actor not only within the action genre but more recently in comedy parts. Ballers is a half-hour dramedy set in Miami that follows a collection of current and past professional football players. The Miami TV series goes beyond the game, delving into the problems that modern players confront and a behind-the-scenes, real-life look at their lives on and off the field.
Johnson portrays Spencer Strasmore, a former NFL player who is contemplating a career change after retirement. The film is set in the action-packed world of American football. He used to play for the Miami Dolphins, but now he works as a financial counselor and wants to assist his buddies who are still in the league sign contracts.
5. Miami Vice (1984-1990)
Miami Vice, which ran on NBC from the mid-to-late 1980s, is one of the oldest series on Miami, but its influence can still be felt today, particularly in terms of the styles it popularized. Not only has it been used as inspiration for video games, e-sports teams, and even a change in county name in modern pop culture media to allude to the legendary 1980s, but it has also served as inspiration for video games, e-sports teams, and even a change in county name.
In the Miami TV show, Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs of the Metro-Dade Police Department’s “vice squad” were followed as they sought to put an end to the booming drug trafficking and organized crime industries.
While there have been many Miami TV shows based in Miami, the television show “Miami Vice” was responsible for putting the city on the map as a filming destination. Back in the day, the city authorities were furious when the series was announced, thinking that a narrative about crime would bring even more attention to a city that had been dubbed “Paradise Lost” by Time magazine only a few years before. However, “Miami Vice’s” neon graphics and MTV-style made the city appear not only dirty but also gorgeous.
