The health center says being more active will better your physical health and increase your mental health awareness
Care Resource is a nonprofit organization and healthcare center in South Florida. The organization hopes to support the healthcare needs of South Florida residents. The pandemic proved that many people need help maintaining a healthy at-home lifestyle. Through promoting physical activity, Care Resource is also promoting mental health awareness.
The COVID-19 pandemic required many to begin their lives from an at-home environment. This means their day-to-day lives consist of low physical activity. Care Resource notes that this lifestyle can bring negative psychological and physiological effects.
Care Resource hopes to help the community maintain positive mental health. To do so, they are providing a guide to lifestyle changes. These changes will increase your physical activity and better your diet.
Regular physical activity is the key to breaking through a sedentary lifestyle. Adults should practice 50 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Adults can also practice 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week. This information comes from the World Health Organization (WHO).
For children and teenagers, the WHO recommends an average of one hour per day of activity. This activity can be of moderate or vigorous intensity. This has been proven to be very beneficial for younger age groups. Coupled with this is the recommendation that sedentary behaviors are reduced. These include sitting on the couch or lying down.
To motivate yourself to be active, you can add yoga or Pilates to your daily routine. Many activities are now conducted partially or fully online. Thus, there are a multitude of exercise classes or videos available online. Participating in live virtual classes can get you connected with other people. It can also increase your motivation to stay dedicated to your exercise regime.
Another option for staying motivated is to exercise with the people you live with. Care Resource notes that most people feel more motivated when exercising in a group.
Getting your body to move can have a positive impact on your mental health. Exercise fuels your body to eat responsibly. This helps you avoid the guilty conscience that comes with overeating.
The other part of living a healthier lifestyle both physically and mentally is what you eat. Gloria Cabral, a registered dietitian at Care Resource, says having a balanced diet is key.
“You should be eating a healthy, balanced diet low in saturated fat, moderate in carbohydrates and protein, and high in fruits and vegetables.”

She also recommends integrating whole grains and berries into your diet. These are “heart-healthy” foods.
Incorporating these changes into your life can improve your physical and mental health. Care Resource has a team of providers ready to help you address any concerns you may have about your health. To accommodate for all patients, they are currently offering telehealth services.
