Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava brings 10 million to child and adult care centers
The COVID- 19 pandemic has devastated individuals on many levels. Children and the vulnerable elderly are among them as well. With quarantine, new strains on budgets, and the loss of social interactions these populations are eager to go back to their reality’s pre-pandemic. District 8 Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava recognized that this was a reality her community was facing and did something about it. She proposed that funds set aside for the CARES Act be allocated to daycare and adult care centers that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her proposal was approved by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.
The grant program would potentially give adult and child daycare centers in the Unincorporated Municipal Service Area $5 million from dedicated CARES Act funds, and an additional $5 million from previously unspent CARES Act funds. This is a substantial amount of money that will help centers struggling financially to re-open following safety guidelines and resume some level of normalcy in their operation.
At a time when people are going back to work, these facilities will become crucial for families. These are the places that care for the community’s children and loved ones, so they deserve the resources to function in the best way possible.
“COVID-19 nearly destroyed our daycare industries. While our families are getting back to work, we must provide financial relief for our child and adult daycare centers that we rely on to take care of our precious children and our vulnerable older adults.”

To ensure the funds are properly distributed the Commission is seeking partnership with the Early Learning Coalition and the Alliance for Aging. The program will be available for private, for-profit, non-profit, and Head Start centers.
