Cooking with Avocado Oil has many different benefits, a surprising one being that it helps fight and prevent cancer with the oleic acid inside it. It also helps with skin damage and irritation, specifically with dry or sunburned skin.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hispanic men frequently have the highest cholesterol of all men in the U.S. Learning about these factors can allow Hispanic families to implement small changes into their diets.
Part of these changes includes swapping out bad fats for good fats to improve heart health by cooking with Avocado Oil. Avocados provide naturally good fats and are adaptable to any dish. Cooking with Avocado oil is also a healthy replacement for butter or margarine, and it has oleic acid which makes it last longer than most other oils in your cabinet.
Saborea Uno Hoy, a website created to promote the use of fresh avocados in cooking, gives Hispanic families easy access to nutrition tips and recipes using avocados.
Saborea Uno Hoy was created by the Hass Avocado Board (HAB), an agricultural promotion group formed to encourage the consumption of fresh Hass avocados in the United States. The goal of HAB is to make avocados America’s favorite fruit, partially by funding nutrition research under the supervision of the United States Department of Agriculture. Saborea Uno Hoy is a science-based program within HAB.
Malena Perdomo, a dietitian and spokesperson for Saborea Uno Hoy, believes that Hispanic families simply need to start with small steps.
“Replacing bad fats can reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood,” said Perdomo, citing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. “Empower yourself to be creative in the kitchen. Be open to adjusting ingredients as a way to limit bad fats and get the health benefits of good fats for the whole family.”
To start, families could use Saborea Uno Hoy’s recipe for Grilled Salmon Tacos, which features an avocado cabbage slaw.

Here are the steps you should follow:
- Season the salmon with cumin and pepper. Then, wrap it in aluminum foil and grill it for 10 to 12 minutes, turning only once.
- Wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil and grill them for 4 minutes, turning once they are warm.
- Now, put the tacos together. Fill the tortillas with salmon, pico de gallo, and the avocado carrot coleslaw.
