The COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily closed many businesses to protect the safety of the public. One of these businesses is It’s a Dream Studio, a hair salon owned by Janessa Socorro.
Socorro decided to close on March 18, one day before the mandated closure of non-essential businesses, because she believed it was impossible to remain socially distant while cutting and coloring hair. This decision didn’t come easy because It's a Dream Studio just opened slightly over a year ago.
“It's a Dream Studio is a symbol of everything that I’ve worked for in this industry for the last 20 years,” said Socorro, understanding that this was the safest decision for herself and her clients.
However, Socorro’s clients have been making requests for house calls via Instagram. In some cases, they have even offered her more money, which she has “reluctantly and respectively declined.”
Declining clients, however, is an extremely difficult decision for Socorro to make, being that she loves what she does for a living and this is how she makes money. Still, Socorro understands that times like this call for the community to be selfless and support each other.
“The safest thing you could do to save a life of someone you may or may not know is to stay home,” said Socorro.
It has been her time at home that led Socorro to create a way to service her clients from a distance.
Unlike other stylists, what makes Socorro stand out is that she has documented her clients hair color formulas. This extra step has enabled her to create custom hair coloring kits for her clients, which her employees deliver to the clients doorstep in a “no-contact” manner.
This is perfect as Mother’s Day approaches, whether you would like to celebrate by perfecting your own roots or gifting a root touch-up kit to your mother or grandmother. Prices are available on the It's a Dream Studio Instagram page under @itsadreamstudio.
This system has allowed Socorro to continue doing what she loves, while keeping her employees’ positions and keeping her clients happy.
“One thing I know is that our health and humanity will get us through this together. Money comes and money goes” Janessa Socorro.
Socorro understands that getting your hair colored is not “essential” for most people but believes this is her way of giving back during a tough time.
