A milestone moment honoring the leaders, artists, and storytellers who built Miami’s most iconic cultural tradition
For a quarter century, Viernes Culturales has been the beating heart of Little Havana—an artistic pulse that has carried Miami’s cultural identity through generations. On Calle Ocho, where Latin music in Miami spills into the streets and visitors wander past the iconic Domino Park and the Little Havana art walk, the community gathered to honor 25 years of culture, creativity, and neighborhood pride. This year’s celebration was more than an event; it was a tribute to the pioneers who helped transform a once-fledgling corridor into a nationally recognized historic neighborhood.

Honoring the leaders and founders who built the legacy
Kicking off the evening was current Viernes Culturales President, Suzy Batlle—affectionately known as “La Jefa” at Azucar Ice Cream—who welcomed the crowd with warmth and gratitude. She recognized the many past presidents and board members who shaped the organization since 2000, reminding the audience that tonight’s celebration stands on the shoulders of many who believed in Little Havana long before it became an internationally beloved Miami destination.
Founding figures including Commissioner Joe Sanchez, Jose Casanova, Pablo Canton, Bill Fuller, and Carole Anne Taylor were celebrated for their early vision—reimagining landmarks like Cuban Memorial Way and laying the infrastructure for what Viernes Culturales would become. Their work helped elevate the neighborhood’s cultural footprint at a time when few could predict the global appeal it enjoys today.
The celebration also honored the artists who brought color and identity to Calle Ocho. The famed mosaics by Nelson Curras and the Curras Brothers helped define the aesthetic of the neighborhood. Longtime artists like Santos Méndez, Annie M., and Ninoska Pérez Castellón were thanked for their contributions, while more modern cultural innovators such as Daniel “Krave” Fila and Diana “Didi” Contreras were recognized for ushering in the next generation of Miami artistry and the many now iconic murals along 8 Street.

Honoring the storytellers who preserve Little Havana’s soul
No celebration of Little Havana is complete without recognizing the one man who has narrated the neighborhood’s history for decades—Dr. Paul George. Widely regarded as Miami’s most respected historian, Dr. George has safeguarded the stories that define our city, from the banks of the Miami River to the very streets where Viernes Culturales first took shape. His presence is a living archive of Miami’s past and its ever-evolving cultural landscape.
For years, he has led the beloved Little Havana Walking Tours, guiding visitors from around the world through the heart of the neighborhood. Held monthly—almost religiously—the tour has now become a signature experience of the Third Friday festivities, offering an intimate glimpse into the heritage that makes Little Havana unforgettable.
A first look at Ventanitas: A story rooted in Little Havana
The audience was also treated to an exclusive preview of Ventanitas, a documentary set to air nationally on PBS. First envisioned by Denise Galvez Turros during the pandemic and funded through a generous grant from the State Historic Division, the film pays tribute to the cultural heartbeat of Miami.
Inspired by the rich stories shared by Dr. Paul George and directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Cardona, the documentary captures the history of Little Havana and the iconic Tamiami Trail through the voices of the community itself. When it premieres in early 2026, Ventanitas will share Little Havana’s story with audiences across the world.
The night’s celebration was more than a milestone—it was a reminder of the power of cultural preservation, community leadership, and the shared pride that makes Little Havana the cultural soul of Miami.
