Vic Fangio is exactly what the Miami Dolphins need to strengthen their lacking defense game
Ex-Broncos Coach Vic Fangio will be the new defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, putting an end to the team's week-long hunt for Boyer's replacement. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Dolphins and Fangio have reached an agreement for Fangio to take over as defensive coordinator in Miami. According to Pelissero, the contract will last for three years and include a team option for a fourth year.
Why Vic Fangio is a top choice for defensive coordinator
The Dolphins have hired Vic Fangio to replace Josh Boyer, who was let go after three seasons as defensive coordinator. Before accepting his position as Mike McDaniel's top assistant in Miami, Fangio had interviews with the Falcons and the Panthers. The highly sought-after defensive coordinator has an impressive track record in the NFL.
Fangio made a name for himself in the NFL as a defensive coordinator for five separate teams before getting his only shot as a head coach, working for the Panthers (1995–1998), Colts (1999–2001), Texans (2002–2005), 49ers (2011–2014), and Bears (2015–2018). His time with the Miami Dolphins could pave the way for him to get a head coaching position after his impressive tenure as defensive coordinator.
Fangio expected to improve the Dolphins’ defense game
The Dolphins went 9-8 last year in Mike McDaniel's first season as offensive coordinator. While Miami's offense was among the league's best in the regular season, the Dolphins' defense was a glaring weakness. The Dolphins' 23.5 points against average placed them 23rd in the league.
With players like Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and Xavien Howard, Vic Fangio should be able to beat that figure in his first season in charge. During his 22 seasons with the NFL, Fangio has served as either a defensive coordinator or head coach. His defense has seen his teams make it to either the top half of the league or the top 10 teams in scoring at least two times.
