Solis Health Plans Commemorates Cuban Independence Day

Solis Health Plans hosted a screening of the film “Plantados” to commemorate Cuban Independence Day on the 20th of May. The event took place in the Cuban cultural center of Calle Ocho, at the Tower Theater. Over 75 seniors from the local community attended the event, invited by the Solis Health Plans partner provider Bienestar Health Center.

The film showcased the bravery and truth of the political prisoners that rebelled against the Castro regime. These heroes were incarcerated in Cuba from the 1960s until the 1990s, and are known as the “plantados.”

Solis Health Plans, a Medicare Advantage company, believes that this portion of history must be remembered. Many people from the local community are of Cuban origin and have personally witnessed the wrongdoings of the Cuban regime. As a local company, the Solis team has roots in South Florida and a strong Cuban heritage.

“This is a powerful film about a topic that cannot be ignored. The human rights violations which occurred in Cuba -- and continue to occur -- is a cause that my family and I are passionate about. We are pleased to have been able to provide a platform to share this important film with our local community.”

To make the event even more meaningful, one of the real plantados behind the film’s story was in attendance. The writer and director, Lilo Vilaplana was also present at the ceremony to show his support. At the event, Vilaplana was presented with a special plaque by the actors in the film and Miami’s former City Commissioner and Mayor Xavier Suarez.

To top it off, Solis Health Plans and the Hernandez Family Foundation donated a combined $10,000 for the organization Plantados Hasta la Democracia y Libertad, an organization that provides support to the families of the plantados.
