Celebrate Mother’s Day in style with some gorgeous flowers from your local businesses
Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8, 2022, and as people around town gear up to celebrate the special women in our lives, local businesses are also preparing for record-breaking flower shipments and deliveries.
Representatives of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, Avianca Cargo, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection organized an exciting look into the flower shipments that made their way to Miami International Airport MIA in light of Mother’s Day.
This is unsurprising since Mother’s Day is the busiest holiday for florists across the country.
Why MIA is breaking records this year
Generally, the MIA receives 89% of the entirety of flowers imported to the U.S. via air. This translates to roughly 327,000 tons of cut flowers worth approximately $1.6 billion as of last year. Between 2020 and 2021, MIA’s flower imports shot up by 39 percent in weight, and according to estimations by the Association of Floral Importers of Florida or AFIF, there will be an additional 10% increase in shipments this Mother’s Day. Around 70% of all flower imports are brought in from Colombia, which is Avianca Cargo’s home country. Flowers happen to be the largest trade commodity in weight of the MIA and the 5th largest in value.
Interesting information about the tour
On April 29, 2022, the Avianca Cargo Warehouse opened its doors to visitors to take a look at the thousands of tons of flower shipments that you can see here. The tour was hosted by Gabriel Oliva, Avianca Cargo CEO; Abel Serrano, Assistant Port Director for Agriculture, U.S. Customs & Border Protection; Indira Almeida – Pardillo, MIA spokesperson.
