Miami tenant murdered over thermostat dispute—defendant faces charges

A shocking act of violence in Miami-Dade County has left the community in disbelief after a landlord allegedly murdered his tenant over a heated disagreement about the thermostat

The tragic incident, which unfolded in the Westchester neighborhood, serves as a stark reminder of how conflicts that may seem trivial can escalate into deadly violence.

Fatal confrontation in Westchester

On January 26, deputies from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a call reporting shots fired at a residence in the 9400 block of Southwest 17th Terrace. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the lifeless body of 57-year-old Carlos Alberto Gonzalez, who had been shot multiple times.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue team quickly transported Gonzalez to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

According to authorities, the altercation began when the homeowner, 37-year-old Adam Louis Anson, arrived at Gonzalez’s home armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Anson allegedly attempted to gain entry by banging on the window and insisting on adjusting the thermostat in the hallway.

When Gonzalez opened the door to confront him, Anson is said to have forced his way inside. A violent struggle ensued, with Anson dragging Gonzalez into the backyard before shooting him multiple times in the head. In a chilling twist, Anson reportedly returned to Gonzalez’s home afterward to adjust the thermostat, as originally intended, before heading to his own home and calling 911 to report the shooting.

Murder charges and legal defense

Anson was arrested shortly after the incident and is facing charges, including second-degree murder with a weapon and home invasion with an armed assault. In his statement to authorities, Anson claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Gonzalez had attacked him first when he tried to enter the residence to adjust the air conditioning.

Community in shock

The murder has stunned the local community, with residents expressing disbelief that a dispute over something as mundane as temperature could escalate so quickly. At a court hearing on Sunday, January 26, the judge denied Anson bail, and he will remain detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until his trial.

Neighbors have described the situation as unsettling, emphasizing the tragic nature of the event. “It’s hard to believe something like this could happen so close to home,” said one local resident. “It’s heartbreaking.”

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with additional information to come forward. As authorities work to uncover more details, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from conflict, even in what should be a safe environment—the home.
