Miami-Dade Deputy arrested for drug trafficking while boarding Groove Cruise: A betrayal of public trust

Sheriff’s Office uncovers deputy’s alleged drug operation during undercover investigation

A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested for drug trafficking, marking a troubling betrayal of public trust. Deputy Francisco Melo who is a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was identified as a dealer of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), a drug commonly known as ecstasy or molly, following an internal investigation.

Undercover operation leads to arrest

On December 20, 2024, an undercover operation was set up with a confidential informant posing as a buyer. The allegation is that Melo sold 12 MDMA pills for $240 during the operation. More detailed investigations revealed that Melo had planned to smuggle drugs aboard the Wonder of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, which was hosting a popular EDM four-day dance music festival known as the “Groove Cruise”.

When Melo arrived at PortMiami on Thursday to board the ship, authorities arrested him. A search of his luggage, assisted by a drug-sniffing K9, revealed six Skittle bags, five of which contained a total of approximately 60 MDMA pills. Melo has since been charged with possession, sale, and trafficking of a controlled substance.

Sheriff condemns betrayal of public trust by deputy

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Codero-Stutz condemned the deputy’s actions in a public statement, emphasizing the importance of accountability within law enforcement.

“No one is above the law, and this office will not tolerate criminal behavior from anyone, especially those entrusted to enforce it,” Codero-Stutz said. “The actions of this individual are a betrayal of the public trust and of all the deputies who work tirelessly to protect our community.”

The arrest has sparked outrage within the Miami community and has raised concerns about the need for stricter oversight to ensure that law enforcement officials adhere to the highest ethical standards.

This case highlights the critical need for transparency and accountability in Miami-Dade’s law enforcement. Stay informed on this and other important stories by subscribing to Calle Ocho News.
