Miami Dade College Padrón Campus: A vision for growth and student success

Dr. Oscar Loynaz shares his strategic goals, new programs, and community engagement efforts

Dr. Oscar Loynaz, the campus president of Miami Dade College Padrón Campus, has a clear vision: to make sure students and the community know about all the opportunities available through education. His main focus is simple — helping students succeed and feel supported every step of the way.

One of his biggest priorities is spreading the word about what Miami Dade College (MDC) can offer. With such a large and diverse community, that’s no small task. However, Dr. Loynaz is dedicated to finding new ways to connect, be it through community events, direct outreach, or partnerships with local organizations.

At the same time, he also wants students to feel valued and respected once they’re on campus. Whether they stay at MDC Padrón Campus for a full program or transfer elsewhere, his goal is to provide guidance, support, and alternative pathways so they can reach their goals.

New programs and career pathways

To meet growing workforce demands, Padrón Campus is introducing new programs that give students practical skills for in-demand careers. One exciting addition is the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. The campus recently celebrated its first class of CNA graduates, many of whom see this as the first step toward a nursing career.

However, healthcare isn’t the only field MDC is focusing on. Programs in cybersecurity, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence are also expanding. As technology rapidly evolves, these programs help students stay ahead of industry trends and prepare for jobs that are shaping the future.

Student support and success

Dr. Loynaz is passionate about ensuring that students don’t just start their education at MDC but thrive. That’s why the campus has expanded tutoring services, with data showing that students who attend at least six tutoring sessions tend to improve their grades by a full letter.

Besides academic help, mental health support is also a big focus. Students now have access to on-campus counseling and 24/7 online mental health services. Recognizing the pressures that come with balancing school, work, and life, MDC wants to make sure students have the resources they need to stay well and focused.

Stronger community connections

A big part of Dr. Loynaz’s strategy is strengthening relationships with local businesses, organizations, and schools. While he successfully built community ties at the MDC Homestead Campus, Miami presents a larger, more complex landscape.

But he’s already making strides by participating and ensuring that campus leadership is engaged with community organizations such as the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and other various local nonprofits.

Padrón Campus is also forming a key partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to expand dual enrollment programs, offering high school students the opportunity to earn college credits at no cost before graduation. This initiative not only makes college more accessible but also provides students with a valuable preview of life at MDC. By experiencing college-level academics, engaging with the campus community, and taking on the responsibilities of a college student, they gain essential skills for their future.

Technology and sustainability

Technology is a major focus forthe Padrón Campus as MDC is leading the way with innovative tools like Microsoft’s Copilot, an AI-powered assistant being piloted in classrooms. The goal is to use AI to improve both teaching and administrative processes, making education more efficient and accessible.

Sustainability is also a priority. The campus is increasing its recycling efforts and working through the Earth Ethics Institute to integrate environmental responsibility into daily campus life.

Another exciting initiative is the Zen Garden, a dedicated space designed to promote wellness and mindfulness led by Yadira Capaz. The peaceful retreat on campus helps students manage stress and improve their mental well-being. Many of these forward-thinking projects are being spearheaded by Gloria Baez, Director of Campus Administration, whose work continues to shape a more holistic educational environment.

Overcoming challenges

Like many colleges, MDC faces challenges like fluctuating enrollment and funding limitations. However, Dr. Loynaz has found an innovative approach to overcome the obstacles.

Strengthening dual enrollment programs and forming strategic partnerships are just a few ways the campus is working to address these issues.

Future ready

Dr. Loynaz’s leadership is centered on student success, community engagement, and innovation. His vision for the future is clear: create an environment where students can thrive, connect MDC with the broader community, and ensure that every student has the tools they need to achieve their dreams.

With new programs, stronger partnerships, and an ongoing commitment to growth, MDC Padrón Campus is well on its way to becoming a hub of opportunity and excellence.

One particularly exciting development is the expansion of the campus art gallery. Padrón Campus has been actively growing its arts program and is now collaborating with Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art and Design (MOAD).

While MOAD’s home base is in the Freedom Tower, renovations have temporarily relocated the museum’s offices to the Padrón Campus, creating a unique opportunity for collaboration.
