Jose "Pepe" Diaz Exemplifies What Public Service Truly Means

In a recent conversation with the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Calle Ocho News had the opportunity to learn about some of his incredible achievements while in office, learn about upcoming plans, and learn unique insights into his political and personal philosophies.

A former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Diaz has continued to extend his service to the people through politics by filling various roles in the community such as the Mayor of Sweetwater, and eventually winning a seat on the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners where he continues to serve even today.

As a man of principle and a true man of the people, he's proven time and again how committed he is to not just his constituents but also the public at large. Most recently, he underwent surgery to remove a non-cancerous yet rare tumor near his brain—but was back in the office soon after.

"I was signing paperwork in the hospital, and after 8-10 days, I was out in the street already going and meeting with people, or them coming to see me… I took 10 days to recover because I don't have the luxury to be out for 7 or 8 weeks like the doctor suggested."

Putting his work above his health is perhaps one of the many examples of his role as a dedicated civil servant, but despite that, he doesn't get even half the recognition he deserves. In fact, he continues to express how his team is a major factor in whatever successes he's seen, including founding the Office of Policy and Budgetary Analysis, which found $80 million in misallocated funding.

It's no easy feat to accomplish something that significant in such a brief timespan, but it's unsurprising to see such amazing work coming out of his office. After all, he is someone who has worked on an incredibly diverse range of issues, including assisting with the housing of veterans across Dade County, making it the first county in the United States to do so.

His passions extend to helping children, the elderly, local farmers, and efforts for ecological preservation all of which have been addressed at some point of his political career. He can't narrow down his passions, including his work as the Sports Commissioner, during which he brought in Super Bowls, the World Cup and Miami's soccer team, Formula 1 racing, and so much more.

When it comes down to it, Jose "Pepe" Diaz is a force to be reckoned with, and with a team as equally passionate and dedicated as he is, Miami-Dade is incredibly fortunate to have them in office.
