FPL is providing five schools in Florida with $50,000 each for classroom upgrades, focusing on enhancing STEM education
With the start of the new academic year, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has rolled out its latest initiative aimed at supporting education in the state. FPL is offering $50,000 classroom makeover grants to five Florida schools, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to improving STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning environments. Schools can apply by November 18, 2024, and use the grant funds to upgrade their STEM classrooms with state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and resources to create engaging learning experiences for students.
Eligible schools include public, private, and charter schools across Florida, serving K-12 students. The grant program targets schools that are either designated as Title 1 institutions or serve at least 40% economically disadvantaged students. Schools that meet these criteria are encouraged to apply for the grant to receive much-needed funds to modernize their STEM classrooms.
FPL’s support for STEM learning and career readiness
FPL’s Classroom Makeover Grant program offers schools the chance to upgrade their STEM facilities with tools such as advanced software, innovative equipment, and specialized resources. These upgrades are designed to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities that will help them develop practical skills and deepen their understanding of STEM subjects.
Schools that have previously received grants are already seeing a positive impact. For example, Cypress Run Education Center in Pompano Beach used the funds to update its multimedia technology lab with new TV production equipment, coding tools, and robotics materials. Other recipients, such as Lauderdale Lakes Middle School and Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, are in the process of completing their classroom transformations. Schools like Coconut Palm K-8 Academy in Homestead and Country Club Middle School in Miami Gardens are also set to complete their makeovers early next year.
This program is part of FPL’s broader mission to empower students and break down barriers to education in underserved communities. By providing the resources needed to enhance STEM learning environments, FPL is investing in the next generation of leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers.
How schools can apply for the $50,000 grant
Applications for the Classroom Makeover Grants are being accepted through November 18, 2024. Eligible schools should act quickly to take advantage of this opportunity, as the funds can be used to significantly upgrade STEM classrooms and foster greater student engagement in science and technology subjects. Schools can use the grant to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing resources, invest in teacher training, and implement innovative teaching methods.
FPL’s initiative is not only focused on improving the quality of STEM education but also on ensuring that students from all economic backgrounds have access to the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in the future. As America’s largest electric utility, FPL has a long history of supporting educational initiatives that align with its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation. By offering these grants, FPL is reinforcing its role as a key player in shaping the future of education and workforce development in Florida.
