Formula One Racing Coming to South Florida

Formula One announced that starting in 2022, the Miami Grand Prix will be part of their yearly schedule for at least ten years. The races will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. To support the race, a 3.4-mile track will be built on the stadium’s property. It is expected that it will have 19 corners, three straights, and will also allow drivers to reach speeds of 200 miles per hour.

This is quite exciting for all Miami residents since it will usher in business and tourism after the pandemic left many struggling. These events will uplift the community and bring more opportunities to South Florida. While some people protested the resolution, it passed with a $5 million commitment to the city, the creation of a STEM program, and various conditions that the race organizers will follow.

Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula One said, “We will be working closely with the team from Hard Rock Stadium and the FIA to ensure the circuit delivers sensational racing but also leaves a positive and lasting contribution for the people in the local community.”

Organizers of the race have stated that Formula One economic impact on South Florida will be hundreds of millions. The Miami Grand Prix will be the second U.S. stop on Formula One’s schedule and only the 11th U.S. Formula One location since the beginning of the World Championship in 1950. It is tentatively scheduled to take place during May or June.

There was a lot of hard work that went into making this a reality. Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, Tom Garfinkel, and their staff have failed numerous times before. Their efforts succeeded with other major events, and they hope this will be no different. Converting a football complex into a racetrack will be a huge project for the stadium, but it would not be the first. In just the last 10 years, Ross transformed it into a tennis complex and even built a training facility for the football team. His dedication allowed for the Super Bowl, the college football national championship game, the Miami Open, and top-level soccer. There is also potential for the Hard Rock to become the host of the 2026 World Cup games.

“The Hard Rock stadium entertainment campus in Miami Gardens exists to host the biggest global events to benefit the entire greater Miami region and Formula One racing is as big as it gets. We have worked with specialist designers to create a racetrack that we, Formula One and the FIA believe will provide great racing and we hope to create best-in-class unique fan experiences that are reflective of the diverse and dynamic nature of Miami,” said CEO and managing partner of the Miami Grand Prix, Tom Garfinkel.
