Driver denied bond in Miami Gardens crash that killed five

Judge denies bond for Antonio Maurice Wilcox Jr. after fatal Miami Gardens high-speed collision

A Miami-Dade judge has denied bond for Antonio Maurice Wilcox Jr., the 25-year-old driver accused of causing a devastating crash in Miami Gardens that claimed the lives of five family members, including four children. The deadly accident occurred on February 8 at the intersection of Northwest 170th Street and 37th Avenue, sending shockwaves through the community.

The tragic chain of events

According to Miami Gardens Police, Wilcox was behind the wheel of a black Kia Sorento when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima at an alarming speed of 99 mph. The impact propelled the Altima into a Cadillac Escalade, resulting in a catastrophic multi-vehicle collision. Inside the Altima were eight passengers, five of whom did not survive the crash.

Surveillance footage from the area captured the horrific moment of impact, and investigators later revealed that Wilcox had been accelerating at the time of the crash. Miami Gardens Police Executive Officer Emmanuel Jeanty confirmed, “Mr. Wilcox was driving at approximately 99 mph, accelerating at the point of impact; the accelerator was all the way down.”

The deceased victims have been identified as Rosa Jones, 51, and her grandchildren: Kamari Graham, who was celebrating his 10th birthday, 8-year-old Azariah McCall, and 10-year-old Ireanna Johnson. Another sibling, 13-year-old Ka’Myra Graham, was initially left brain dead after the accident but later succumbed to her injuries, according to a family friend.

Court proceedings and prosecutor’s argument

During Wilcox’s bond hearing on Wednesday, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer emphasized the gravity of the charges. “I believe that Mr. Wilcox poses a great danger to this community based on these charges alleged here and the fact that he killed five people driving,” she stated. “He may not have been above the legal limit, but he was inebriated or had alcohol in his system at the time.”

The prosecution reinforced the judge’s concerns, citing Wilcox’s reckless behavior and the severe consequences of his actions. Two other victims involved in the crash remain in critical condition, adding to the devastation caused by the incident.

Wilcox now faces five counts of vehicular homicide and five counts of manslaughter, charges that could carry significant prison time if convicted. The court’s decision to deny bond means he will remain behind bars as he awaits trial.

Community mourns and calls for justice

The tragedy has left the Miami Gardens community in mourning, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent reckless driving incidents. Friends, family, and neighbors have gathered at vigils to honor the lives lost, remembering Rosa Jones as a dedicated grandmother and her grandchildren as vibrant and loving children with bright futures ahead of them.

Local leaders urge lawmakers to strengthen traffic safety regulations and impose harsher penalties for reckless drivers. “This is a wake-up call for all of us,” said Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert III. “We need to ensure our roads are safe and hold those accountable who put innocent lives at risk.”

As the case moves forward, the victims’ family members continue to grapple with their loss while demanding justice for their loved ones.
