According to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) Global Open medical journal, cosmetic surgery is worth approximately $60 billion in the medical tourism industry. Thus, medical tourism is rapidly increasing as an estimated 14-16 million patients across the world look abroad for their medical care each year. This is due to a demand for more high quality and cost-effective healthcare.

In addition, modern technologies in the transportation industry as well as communication are huge driving forces for growth of the medical tourism industry. A study done by the PRS Global Open reviewed medical records of 658 patients who travelled internationally for cosmetic surgery to Colombia. The study was done on patients from February 2013 and April 2018.

The study showed that patients travelled to Colombia from 34 countries across 6 continents. Most patients came from the United States, at a percentage of 66 percent, while others came from Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe.

In total, the 658 patients studied had 1,796 cosmetic surgery procedures done. The study narrowed the surgical sites to a list of the top ten:

  1. Liposuction
  2. Buttock augmentation
  3. Tummy tuck
  4. Breast lift
  5. Breast augmentation
  6. Eyelid surgery
  7. Facial fat grafting
  8. Facelift and/or Neck lift
  9. Rhinoplasty
  10. Arm lift

Thus, patients from different countries worldwide have travelled to Colombia over the past five years to have cosmetic surgery procedures done. Dr. Merlano is bringing his expertise from Colombia all the way to Orlando for patients to get a small taste of what his procedures consist of through consultations.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many residents are travelling within the United States to still get that vacation feel without leaving the country. This is the perfect opportunity for Floridians to take a drive to Orlando and meet Dr. Merlano to see what procedures they may be able to get done.

In addition, many surgery-seekers know that cosmetic surgery requires quite a bit of recovery time at home, which is easier done now as a good portion of the nation is still on-hold due to the pandemic.

Thus, there is no reason to not go see Dr. Merlano in Orlando on the 2nd and 3rd of October and learn about cosmetic surgery and how you could potentially contribute to the medical tourism industry.
