Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis is bringing heart, hustle, and hands-on help to District 6

The newly appointed elected official is tackling issues with family-first policies, small business support, and good old-fashioned face-to-face conversations

When Natalie Milian Orbis stepped into her role as the newly appointed Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 6, she brought years of experience.

With nearly two decades of living and working in District 6 and 20 years in Miami-Dade County government, Commissioner Milian Orbis is no stranger to the everyday challenges residents face. From garbage pickup to pothole repairs, she knows the “little things” that make a big difference in people’s lives.

A full-circle moment

Commissioner Milian Orbis describes her appointment as a full-circle moment in a journey that started at just 19 years old, when she began working at the Stephen P. Clark Center. Over the years, she served as a legislative aide and Director to three county commissioners, spent 11 years in the Office of Community Advocacy, and, most recently, served as Vice Mayor of West Miami. Now, as commissioner, she says she’s ready to use her knowledge of county operations, budgets, and public services to create real, lasting change.

“This role is both a dream and a responsibility,” she shared. “And I don’t take it lightly.”

Taking over after Commissioner Kevin Cabrera was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Panama, she hit the ground running, holding nine town halls across the district to build trust, gather feedback, and make sure no resident was left behind.

Programs that put families, seniors and small business first

Commissioner Milian Orbis has quickly rolled out several hands-on, people-first programs designed to support families, businesses, and vulnerable residents in District 6. Here’s a quick look at just a few of them:

Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program

Up to $5,000 in funding is available for small businesses, regardless of whether they are storefront or home-based. The grants can be used for everything from marketing and equipment to minor renovations. “My father ran a small business for decades,” said Commissioner Milian Orbis. “I know firsthand what it takes—and what a difference a little help can make.”

Expectant Mothers Parking Permit Voucher

For qualifying pregnant residents, this voucher covers the cost of a permit allowing easier access to designated parking spaces near medical facilities and essential services. “As a mom, I know how important it is to feel supported during pregnancy,” she said. “This is about meeting families where they are.”

Swimming Lesson Voucher Program in Hialeah

This program provides free swimming lessons for children living in Hialeah with vouchers available on a first-come, first-served basis. “This is about safety and peace of mind for parents,” she said.

West Miami Summer Camp Voucher Program

District 6 kids aged 6 to 14 can now enjoy a summer of learning and fun at the West Miami Recreation Center, thanks to this voucher initiative. “Every child deserves a summer filled with laughter, learning, and new friendships,” Commissioner Milian Orbis said.

New text messaging line for residents

Want to report a concern or ask a question? Just text (305) 267-6377, which is the same number the district has used for years. “We’re making government accessible,” said Commissioner Milian Orbis. “It should be easy to get help.”

Real talk, real impact

Commissioner Milian Orbis isn’t just sitting behind a desk. She’s out there, literally knocking on doors with her “Knocking with Natalie” initiative (or “Compartiendo con Natalie” in Spanish). This home visitation program connects her directly with elderly and homebound residents, people who might not make it to a town hall, send an email, or pick up the phone.

“It’s important to meet people where they are,” she said. “Sometimes that means showing up on their doorstep with a smile and a notebook.”

She’s also championed programs like senior meal deliveries and internships for neurodivergent young adults through the WoW Center to ensure her policies include everyone, from the most vulnerable to those just getting started in life.

Big-picture projects

Commissioner Milian Orbis is just as passionate about infrastructure as she is about family-focused programs. Projects like septic tank eliminations, Coral Way repaving, and the Ludlam Trail pedestrian greenway are her way of creating a more connected, healthier community.

“Ludlam Trail is about creating safe, walkable spaces where families can bike, walk, and enjoy the outdoors,” she said. “These are quality-of-life upgrades that benefit everyone.”

A legacy of service

Commissioner Milian Orbis hopes to be remembered not just for what she did, but for how she made people feel: seen, heard, and supported.

As a daughter of immigrants, a mother, and a homeowner herself, she views every decision through the lens of what’s best for families. “When we support moms, small businesses, kids, and seniors, we’re supporting the whole community,” she said.

And she’s not doing it alone. She invites every resident of District 6 to get involved, speak up, and help shape the future of their neighborhoods.
