A legacy of love and service: Jorge A. Plasencia reflects on his mother's impact
As the first anniversary of Gilda Machado Plasencia's passing approached on December 4th, 2024, her son, Jorge A. Plasencia, sat down to reflect on her lasting influence. A key figure in inspiring the creation and success of Amigos for Kids, an organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and supporting children in need, Gilda's spirit continues to inspire those who knew her.
From the beginning of Amigos for Kids in 1991, Gilda was deeply involved, always supporting her son in this lifelong work he began as a teenager. Jorge recalls her commitment to the cause, often volunteering her time, bringing others into the fold, and always being a beacon of positivity within the community.
Over the years, Gilda became a driving force championing the organization and its growth, her dedication ensuring that the mission of protecting vulnerable children remained front and center.
A story of giving and dedication
Jorge shared that his mother’s love for children and their well-being was evident in everything she did, especially during the holidays. One memorable aspect of her involvement was her leadership in the annual holiday toy drive. He remembers his mother joyfully leading hundreds of children in Christmas carols, embodying the warmth and compassion that defined her. But it wasn’t just about the events— Gilda took time to connect with families on a personal level. Many times, she would sit with parents, share her own story as a Cuban exile, and offer words of encouragement to immigrant families striving to build new lives.
Gilda’s journey from Havana, Cuba, to the United States in 1961 was one of resilience and determination. After arriving in Miami as a teenager, she worked tirelessly to support her family. Initially, she drove children for a local nursery, and later, she worked at Mount Sinai Hospital performing EKGs. She quickly earned a reputation for her work ethic, which led to a job managing a successful cardiology practice on Miami Beach. Gilda eventually transitioned to real estate, where she enjoyed a successful career. Despite the demanding nature of her professional life, she always made time for her others, consistently embodying the values of charity and service.
A mother's influence on family and community
Jorge credits much of his own passion for community work to the example set by his parents. “La caridad empieza en casa,” his parents often said, meaning "charity starts at home." Gilda instilled in her children the importance of giving back, no matter how big or small the gesture. She was always present for those in need, whether it was driving elderly family members to appointments or supporting local charities. Her selflessness not only shaped the foundation of Amigos for Kids but also influenced Jorge's career path. Today, as CEO at Republica Havas, Jorge continues to focus on social impact and community development, inspired by his mother’s example.
As Jorge and his family marked the one-year anniversary of Gilda’s passing, they recently gathered for a mass at St. Agustine Catholic Church, a place she frequented. Surrounded by family and close friends, they honored her memory and reflected on the positive, life-affirming impact she had on everyone around her.
When asked what he hoped people would remember most about his mother, Jorge’s answer was
simple: “Her infectious smile, her love of life, her gratitude for this country, and her commitment to helping others.” Gilda’s legacy, both within Amigos for Kids and in the hearts of all who knew her, will continue to inspire future generations.
