Celebrations commence as each world champion adds another jewel to their crown after the Miami Open
The Miami Open ended on Sunday, April 3, with a few twists and turns along the way. The tournament is one of the biggest in tennis, attracting national and international players to face off in some of the most grueling, nail-biting matches the sport has ever seen.
This year's tournament was no different, with two victors, Iga Swiatek in the women's category and Carlos Alcaraz in the men's category, crowned this year's champions. Let's take a look at these two talented and exceptionally bright young players at the Miami Open:
More about the Sunshine Doubles Champion Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek didn't just dominate the Miami Open; the 20-year old player originally from Poland also crushed the Indian-Wells Championship right before. The soon-to-be women's tennis no. 1 won both tournaments back to back, killing it in her final match against Naomi Osaka at 6-4 6-0.
She is only the fourth female player who has completed the Sunshine Doubles while also dominating her third back-to-back tournament from the WTA 1000 circuit. This comes as a surprise, given that she is at the very start of her career and already has 17 consecutive victories under her belt.
What makes Carlos Alcaraz so spectacular
Another young player who has carved a space for himself at the forefront of men's tennis is Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Casper Ruud and took the title home.
The 18-year-old Spaniard has become the youngest male champion in Miami Open history. This record for formerly held by the then 19-years-and-10-months-old Novak Djokovic in 2007.
This win will take Alcaraz to jaw-dropping No. 11 in the world, which is incredible given that this is also the start of his career in tennis, bagging his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 title. He is also the third-youngest person in the world to have achieved that, being preceded by Michael Chang and Rafael Nadal.
We're excited to see how these tennis stars make a mark on the sport in the years to come and in upcoming tournaments!
