The Miami Dolphins recently wrapped up the 2021 season, saying goodbye to their head coach since 2019
Coach Brian Flores and Miami Dolphins
As the 2021 NFL season came to a close on January 9, 2022, the Miami Dolphins announced that they would be relieving coach Brian Flores of his duties. This comes as an important bit of sports news in Miami, given that Flores just helped the team win the final eight of their nine games at the end of the season.
However, the back-to-back wins were not enough, even after his third year as a Head Coach and a 24-25 record. Flores, though commendable in his work and recruitment, improving the team’s roster significantly during his tenure, could not make the cut for the upcoming season.
The potential reasons for this decision
In a press release shared by the Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross thanked Flores for his services and wished him the best for the future, but also stated that despite the impressive roster, they were not optimized as an organization.
This is important to note because, at the end of the day, this is a national-level team and is being operated as a business organization. The decision to say goodbye to Flores is not underhanded or malicious; it’s about the conflicting values.
While Flores has done a fantastic job, there have been issues with communication and seeing eye to eye on a professional level. Ross shared that he had observed the team continually for the past three years, and despite wins and upticks, it wasn’t sustainable to keep Flores in the long run.
With the larger goal to secure consistent NFL-level wins, it’s unsurprising that Ross and the management team would reach this decision. After all, it’s not uncommon for coaches to be changed every few seasons.
Where the Dolphins are headed next season
Coach Flores leaving, however, does not mean that the rest of the team’s roster will change drastically right away. The team’s General Manager, Chris Grier, is sticking around for longer. Grier has been with the Dolphins for the last 22 years, stepping up as GM six seasons ago. For the last three seasons, he’s been in charge of football operations.
Currently, they’re still in the process of deciding what the team’s future will be with the current quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. The team, especially Grier himself, hinted at wanting to trade in Deshaun Watson, which is likelier now with Flores gone.
Though Texans and Floridians alike await more clarity on the matter, speculation has started off right away.
As for the possible new Head Coach, we can only wait and watch. However, there is speculation in that arena, too, with some guessing Jim Harbaugh as a potential coach.
Ross himself, however, has not stated a preference and says he does not have a coach in mind.
