Commissioner Higgins joins World Central Kitchen to provide meals to the community’s senior population
On Thursday, February 25th, District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins worked with World Central Kitchen (WCK) to provide hot meals to the seniors in Little Havana. This was a project to further the WCK’s national campaign of emergency food aid #ChefsforAmerica and a continuation of the collaboration between the WCK and District 5 that will continue to flourish through March.
The events took place at Vista Alegre Apartments, 2235 SW 8 Street, Miami FL 33135, at 10 a.m, and at Las Palmas Plaza I y II, 740 NW 25 Avenue, Miami, FL 33125 at 10:30 a.m. The restaurants that participated in the initiative are Cafe La Trova, Le Petit Bistrot, and El Cristo Restaurant and Catering.
The WCK’s mission is to supply food to support and strengthen communities going through a crisis. With this in mind, the WCK has been extremely active throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. They supplied food to children, families, and seniors in communities that need support. Other food distributions have been previously held in Miami Beach and all over Miami-Dade County.
The WCK has been fighting hunger for over a decade, doing all it can to create better conditions for everyone. Not only did they organize food distribution events, but they have also created the Restaurants for the People program to help the entire restaurant industry. Through that program, the WCK helps match those in need of jobs to restaurants within the program, and they purchased over 12 million meals at the national level with this incentive.
It is incredible that the combined efforts of Commissioner Higgins and the WCK mean that just in February, over 3,640 meals were given to individuals all over District 5. They have worked hard to ensure that those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have access to their necessities.
