Viral migrant influencer sent back to Venezuela after controversial US journey

The social media influencer was deported following public criticism of US immigration policies

A Venezuelan social media influencer known for documenting his journey to the US has been deported after sparking debate over immigration policies. His videos, which detailed his experiences crossing the border, drew both support and criticism from viewers. Ultimately, authorities removed him, leading to a discussion on tensions surrounding migration and the role of social media in the debate.

From social media stardom to deportation

Leonel Moreno, a Venezuelan social media influencer, gained widespread attention online by sharing his journey to the United States. His videos documented his experience crossing the border, seeking asylum, and attempting to build a life in the US. Along the way, he gained a large following, with many supporters praising his resilience and a select few others criticizing his presence. However, his outspoken content eventually caught the attention of authorities, leading to his deportation back to Venezuela.

Moreno's online presence made him a polarizing figure. While some viewed him as a symbol of hope for migrants, others saw his content as evidence of flaws in US immigration policies. His case highlights the growing intersection of social media and immigration enforcement.

Backlash and legal challenges

As Moreno's popularity grew, so did the criticism. Many Americans questioned how he was able to enter and remain in the US, especially as he continued posting about his life without legal status. His videos, which often showcased the challenges and opportunities of living in the US as an undocumented migrant, sparked heated debates online.

Authorities reportedly took notice of his public statements, leading to increased scrutiny of his case. Despite his attempts to seek legal protection, officials determined that he did not meet the requirements for asylum or other relief. This decision ultimately led to his detention and subsequent deportation to Venezuela, marking a dramatic shift in his fortunes.

Controversial statements and arrest

Moreno's content often fueled outrage, especially after he encouraged other illegal migrants to occupy abandoned houses in the US through his TikTok videos. He also boasted about using his infant daughter – who was born in the US and is a citizen – to gain more online engagement. In one video, he claimed that he and his wife didn’t pay for their daughter’s birth, crediting former president Biden for covering the costs.

His legal troubles escalated when he failed to appear for required check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), leading to his arrest in Gahanna, Ohio, in March 2024. An immigration judge later ordered his deportation in October 2024. By February 26, 2025, Moreno was transferred to an ICE detention center in Conroe, Texas, in preparation for his removal.

On the flight back to Venezuela, Moreno reportedly caused disruptions, upsetting fellow passengers. However, upon his arrival, Venezuela’s Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, publicly stated that Moreno was “welcome” back into the country.

The impact of social media on immigration

Moreno's story underscores the influence of social media in shaping public discourse on immigration. While platforms like TikTok and Instagram have provided migrants with a platform to share their experiences, they have also made individuals more visible to authorities and critics.

His deportation serves as a warning to others in similar situations. Online fame and being a social media influencer can bring attention, but it can also lead to serious consequences. As immigration policies continue to evolve, cases like Moreno's highlight the complex realities faced by those seeking a better future in the US.
