The retired Miami Heat professional basketball player, Alonzo Mourning, was awarded the Community Champion Award for all the incredible work he has done. As of 2009, he has been back with the Heat in the position of Vice President of Player Programs and Development. As such, he is tasked with creating community outreach and mentoring young players.
Amongst his philanthropic works, he has also created the Mourning Family Foundation. It is a non-profit organization that was created to inspire individuals through advocacy, education, and enrichment services. Since its funding in 1997, Mourning has raised over $10 million to support many programs for the development of children and their families.
Mourning has been recognized many times for his work in the community. These include the NBA’s Community Assist Award in 2006, the National Urban League’s Outstanding Community Service Award in 2003, the Silver Medallion Community Service Award by the National Conference for Community and Justice in 2003, NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Sportsmanship Award in 2002, and The Children’s Trust Excellence Award for Public Policy in 2007.
It was the first time that the SFLHCC awarded the Community Champion Award, but it has been agreed that it will be tradition and given to someone with Alonzo Mourning’s qualities. The award will hold Mourning's name becoming the Alonzo Mourning Community Champion Award.
