Mayor Levine Cava champions next-gen cargo visibility pilots at the port
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the four winning pilot projects of the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority’s (MDIA) Public Innovation Challenge, a high-impact initiative focused on revolutionizing cargo visibility at PortMiami. The projects, led by Argu Eye Ltd, Conbo.ai, GenLogs, and GridMatrix, each received $100,000 in funding to test real-world applications of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and analytics at one of the nation's busiest seaports.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava shared that implementing real-time cargo tracking through this pilot project is a major step forward in positioning PortMiami as the leading trade gateway in the Americas. She emphasized that the initiative highlights the County’s dedication to smart, future-focused infrastructure which improves efficiency, drives global competitiveness, generates local employment, and enhances service for partners and stakeholders.

Four startups bring real-time insights to port operations
Each of the four selected startups brings a distinct solution to the table:
- GenLogs will offer data insights on cargo movement throughout the state and beyond, bolstering business development.
- Conbo.ai will deliver visibility into truck flow at the port and, in partnership with PortMiami and POMTOC, analyze movements within the terminal itself.
- GridMatrix will monitor port traffic with a focus on congestion and roadway safety.
- Argu Eye Ltd will use AI-driven monitoring to track container movements and detect safety-related incidents.
Collectively, these pilots aim to address long-standing logistical issues, including terminal congestion, operational inefficiencies, and limited real-time tracking capabilities.
MDIA bridges the gap between government and innovation
The Public Innovation Challenge, now in its third iteration, is a model for how local governments can substitute technological advancement. Leigh-Ann A. Buchanan, President and CEO of MDIA, explained that the collaboration with PortMiami, one of the region’s key economic drivers, not only boosts efficiency but also serves as a replicable example of how public infrastructure can foster innovation in the private sector.
The MDIA's larger goal is to link government partners with early- and growth-stage businesses so they may address practical problems by means of pilot testing. Its award-winning approach has already gained national attention as a replicable model for municipalities aiming to modernize infrastructure.
PortMiami: At the forefront of the Smart Port revolution
Hydi Webb, Director and CEO of PortMiami, highlighted that advancements in cargo visibility are at a critical turning point. She noted that through MDIA’s Public Innovation Challenge, PortMiami is positioning itself as a leader in adopting next-generation ‘smart port’ solutions.
As one of Miami-Dade’s largest economic engines, contributing $61 billion annually and supporting over 340,000 jobs, PortMiami’s embrace of innovation underscores the county’s commitment to maintaining global competitiveness.
