Sustainability efforts: Shore Power arrives at PortMiami
In addition to breaking cruise traffic records, it has also achieved a historic environmental milestone. On June 17, 2024, the port launched its shore power initiative, allowing cruise ships to turn off their engines and connect to landside electrical power while docked.
This move is expected to drastically reduce emissions and noise pollution, making Miami one of the most environmentally conscious cruise ports in the world.
PortMiami’s shore power project is a collaborative effort with major cruise lines, including:
✔ Carnival Corporation & PLC
✔ MSC Cruises
✔ Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings
✔ Royal Caribbean Group
✔ Virgin Voyages
✔ Florida Power & Light Company
With shore power now available at five cruise berths, PortMiami has set the standard for sustainable cruising on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.
PortMiami: An economic powerhouse
As one of Miami-Dade County’s largest economic engines, PortMiami contributes $61 billion annually to the local economy and supports over 340,000 jobs. With new ships arriving, sustainability initiatives underway, and record-breaking passenger numbers, PortMiami continues to drive economic growth and tourism in South Florida.
