In a forward-thinking initiative aligned with Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Future Ready plan, PortMiami has partnered with Miami Dade College (MDC) to enhance South Florida’s growing maritime industry workforce.
This dynamic partnership is set to benefit maritime workers, Port staff, and Miami Dade College students alike through a specialized Logistics and Transportation Specialist College Credit Certificate program. The collaboration is designed to empower individuals with critical trade, logistics, and supply chain management skills—key sectors in Miami’s local and global economy.
PortMiami and Miami Dade College join forces
Beginning in Fall 2024, maritime workers employed at PortMiami will have the unique opportunity to enroll in MDC’s Logistics and Transportation Specialist program. Participants in the program will be exposed to essential knowledge in logistics and supply chain management, gaining a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of the industry. They will join Miami Dade College students in the classroom, with coursework designed to develop critical skills such as planning, organizing, and negotiating, all while exploring the cross-functional relationships that drive modern supply chains.
As part of its commitment to fostering innovation and career advancement, PortMiami has already held information workshops for maritime workers, offering insights into the certificate program. These sessions have highlighted the benefits of the program, which include career advancement opportunities, improved job security, and the chance to transition into high-demand roles within logistics and transportation.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a strong advocate for workforce development, hailed the partnership as a crucial step toward building a stronger, more resilient economy. She stated that the partnership with Miami Dade College represented a significant advancement for the community, offering maritime workers a valuable chance to improve their skills and progress in their careers. She mentioned that by creating a pathway for workers to earn college credentials in supply chain management, the initiative not only empowered individuals but also reinforced the foundation of the global economy.

"This program unlocks new opportunities for our maritime workers and drives innovation within the industry,” she added.
In-depth, cross-functional learning
Students in the Logistics and Transportation Specialist program will receive hands-on training in areas critical to the functioning of supply chains. These include standard operating procedures, negotiation techniques, warehousing, sustainability, purchasing, and import/export processes. In addition, the program will cover project management, quality control, and accounting concepts relevant to the logistics sector.
The curriculum’s broad-based approach aims to reflect the interconnected nature of supply chain management, preparing students to handle real-world challenges in the field. This training is especially relevant as Miami continues to grow as a global logistics hub, with PortMiami playing a key role in facilitating international trade and economic activity.
Students enrolled in the certificate program may also apply for MDC’s Kick-Start Program, which provides substantial financial assistance. Launched in 2020 as part of Miami Dade College’s workforce training initiative, the Kick-Start Program covers 100% of tuition and fees for students pursuing high-demand, high-wage occupations, including logistics. Additionally, participants will receive a $250 book stipend, further easing the financial burden of pursuing higher education.
This level of support makes the program accessible to PortMiami employees looking to expand their knowledge and career prospects without the worry of tuition costs. By investing in workforce development, Miami Dade College and PortMiami are ensuring that the local economy benefits from a steady supply of well-trained professionals capable of keeping Miami’s trade and logistics industries competitive.
