South Dade celebrates opening of the Florida City Tax Collector's Office

Despite the rain, residents and leaders turn out to support a major step forward in local access to government servicesin Florida City

Not even the summer rain could dampen the spirit of celebration in South Dade as residents and officials gathered for the grand opening of the Florida City Tax Collector Office. Spearheaded by Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, this new branch marks a pivotal moment in bringing essential county services closer to home for residents of Florida City and surrounding areas.

With a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 1448 N Krome Avenue, the newly opened facility becomes the fifth full-service Tax Collector Office under Fernandez’s leadership. The conversion of this former state-run DMV into a modern, community-focused office reflects a broader mission of decentralizing access and putting people first.

A promise fulfilled for South Dade residents

The new Florida City branch isn’t just about paperwork; it’s about people. Providing driver's license and ID issuance, property tax payments, vehicle registration, and business tax receipt services, all under one roof, the office is designed with both accessibility and efficiency in mind.

“This is more than a ribbon cutting—it’s a promise to the people of South Dade,” said Dariel Fernandez, addressing the crowd. “We’re bringing government to the people, where it belongs. Residents here will no longer need to travel long distances to get the services they should have right here.”

The ceremony garnered widespread support from local elected officials, business owners, and community leaders, many of whom praised Fernandez’s efforts to modernize and localize government functions.

Transforming state-run facilities into community anchors

This new Florida City location is part of a larger county initiative to reimagine how government services are delivered. Under Fernandez’s leadership, several former Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) offices are being transitioned into Miami-Dade County-run Tax Collector offices, with full integration of services and an emphasis on community engagement.

Designed to reflect both functionality and local identity, the Florida City branch includes upgraded service windows, ADA-compliant facilities, and a bilingual support staff ready to serve the area’s diverse population.
