Miami-Dade County Parks brings communities together for Park(ing) Day to foster conversations about urban design and sustainable space utilization.
On September 20, 2024, Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces, alongside several key partners, hosted a thought-provoking and community-centered Park(ing) Day event at the Brickell Metrorail Station. The initiative temporarily transformed parking spaces into vibrant public parks, offering a unique platform for the public to engage in the global movement advocating for greener, more sustainable urban spaces. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event attracted residents, visitors, and urban design enthusiasts to explore the possibilities of reimagining the use of curbside parking spaces to better serve communities.
A movement for greener, more inclusive streets
Originally started in 2005 as a guerrilla art installation in San Francisco, Park(ing) Day has grown into an international event aimed at sparking a conversation about urban design and public space utilization. The 2024 Miami edition was no different. The Miami-Dade County Parks, along with its partners, sought to raise awareness about the importance of green spaces in an urban environment that often prioritizes vehicle movement and storage over the needs of people.
At the event, parking spaces at the Brickell Metrorail Station, located at SW 1 Avenue and SW 10 Street, were temporarily repurposed into dynamic and interactive park installations. Residents were encouraged to explore the parks, participate in walking and biking activities, and engage in discussions about the future of urban design in Miami-Dade. It was a reminder of the growing need for more inclusive, green spaces in cities around the world, especially in bustling metropolitan areas like Miami.
Collaborating for a sustainable Miami
The success of Miami-Dade's Park(ing) Day was a collaborative effort involving key local organizations including the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), Neat Streets Miami, Million Trees Miami, Bike Share Museum, The Underline, Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Transit Alliance, Green Theory, and Division 32. Together, they transformed a series of parking spaces into a temporary public park, drawing attention to the potential benefits of rethinking how urban spaces can serve the public.
This year’s Park(ing) Day was part of a broader tactical urbanism movement that encourages the temporary use of public spaces to inspire long-term change. With more than 70% of city streets dedicated to vehicle movement and storage, Park(ing) Day advocates for a reallocation of urban space to benefit the broader community, making cities more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.
Miami’s growing urbanization poses challenges when it comes to balancing vehicle needs with public green spaces. Park(ing) Day provided a glimpse into what a greener, more community-oriented Miami could look like. The event also promoted the use of public transportation, encouraging attendees to take advantage of the Metrorail and Metromover services for easy access to the event, avoiding the limited parking situation at Brickell Metrorail Station.
As the city of Miami continues to grow, events like Park(ing) Day serve as critical reminders of the role of public parks and open spaces in shaping sustainable, vibrant urban environments. Miami-Dade Parks hopes that the discussions sparked by this event will lead to more permanent changes in urban planning and design, making the city more livable and inclusive for residents of all backgrounds.
