Miami-Dade County Mayor calls on Congressional Delegation to protect essential healthcare programs
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is calling on Florida’s Congressional Delegation to oppose proposed federal budget cuts that would significantly reduce Medicaid funding and impact millions of Floridians who depend on essential healthcare services. In a letter sent today, the Mayor expressed deep concern over the consequences of such cuts, emphasizing the need to balance fiscal responsibility with compassionate governance.
Medicaid cuts threaten vulnerable communities
Mayor Levine Cava warned that the proposed federal budget resolution would destabilize Medicaid, a vital program that provides healthcare coverage to over 720,000 Miami-Dade residents and millions across Florida. The cuts would disproportionately affect low-income families, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, leaving them without access to critical medical care.
"As the mayor of Florida’s most populous county, I am deeply concerned over the proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid and other programs that threaten the health and well-being of over 720,000 Miami-Dade residents and millions of Floridians,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “I firmly believe that fiscal responsibility and compassionate governance must go hand in hand. And while I strongly support responsible budgeting, we must ensure that efforts to reduce federal spending do not jeopardize access to life-saving medical care for our most vulnerable populations."
Beyond healthcare access, the Mayor highlighted the economic repercussions of Medicaid cuts, noting that reductions would lead to lower incomes for the bottom 40% of earners and increase financial insecurity in Miami-Dade and throughout Florida.

A call for responsible reform, not drastic cuts
While Miami-Dade County is committed to eliminating wasteful spending and improving efficiency, Mayor Levine Cava emphasized that these goals must be achieved without sacrificing healthcare security for those in need. She pointed to initiatives like WISE 305, a county-led effort to streamline government operations, modernize services, and cut redundant expenses while safeguarding essential public programs.
“Miami-Dade County continues to take proactive steps to enhance efficiency and reduce waste, ensuring that government spending remains focused and strategic,” said Levine Cava. “However, these budget decisions should not come at the cost of healthcare access for our most vulnerable residents.”
The Mayor urged Florida’s Congressional Delegation to reject the proposed Medicaid cuts and advocate for responsible reforms that modernize healthcare spending without harming essential services. She called on lawmakers to protect Florida’s healthcare infrastructure and ensure that all residents have the medical security they need to thrive.
