The American Black Film Festival celebrates its 29th year with 5-day exciting events starting June 11
The 29th annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is set to light up Miami Beach from June 11 to 15, 2025, to celebrate Black culture and creativity in cinema.
This year, ABFF boasts a dynamic lineup of narrative and documentary films from a variety of nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Zambia, Canada, and Jamaica.
The festival will start off with the HBO Short Film Award Showcase. Previously, acclaimed filmmakers, such as Ryan Coogler and Reinaldo Marcus Green, had their early works featured on the platform, which helped boost their careers.
Notable premieres include “Trouble Man,” starring Method Man, Mike Epps, and LaLa Anthony, and “HOORAH 99!” featuring Ja Rule.
Moreover, Yvonne Orji is the producer on “The Fisherman,” a film about an aging Ghanaian who seeks assistance from a talking dead fish to accomplish his goals.
Events and masterclasses
Attendees can also participate in “Producing Stories for Global Audiences on a Budget” and “The Art of Emotional Writing: Engaging Audiences Scene by Scene” masterclasses.
There will also be panel discussions held to discuss the different sides of filmmaking and Black culture. Moreover, the experts will delve into insightful talks on the future of the industry with the progression of AI.
But the entertainment doesn’t end there. “Because They’re Funny” comedy show and the iconic “Legendary White Party” at M2 Nightclub will be the highlight of the evening.
The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater will also hold the “City of Miami Community Day.”

Honoring the legacy
To honor the legacy of Black cinema, a special screening of the 1997 romantic drama “Love Jones” will be held, featuring an intimate conversation with the film’s stars, Nia Long and Larenz Tate.
The festival will wrap up with the “Best of ABFF Awards” ceremony on June 14, hosted by three-time Emmy-nominated actor and author Dondré Whitfield. Awards include the John Singleton Award for Best Debut Feature, presented by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
