John H. Ruiz has an illustrious career, but we learned more about him and why he does what he does with his family
This Father’s Day we want to tell you about John H. Ruiz, a powerhouse of a man for many reasons. Most know him as the founder of MSP Recovery Law Firm and MSP Recovery but there are many things you probably don’t know about John H. Ruiz.
Some call him a “Disruptor”, others call him a Martindale-Hubbell AV Rated Attorney, businessman, entrepreneur, billionaire, etc. It really doesn’t matter what you choose to call this man, today we choose to recognize him as the son, brother, husband, father, and last but certainly not least, the mentor he is to countless athletes.
John H. Ruiz on how he’s an inspiration to many and how he got to where he is today:
Invaluable “Family Life” lessons
If you have done some research on John H. Ruiz, you notice one thing in common in many of his interviews. He is always mentioning his family every chance he gets so it’s clear that they hold a very special place in his heart. He personally shared with us that both of his parents have been a source of inspiration for him.
His dad, Emeterio Ruiz, has been more responsible for the work ethics John maintains but his mom, Nelida Ruiz, is responsible for making him the generous and humble person he is today. John and his wife Mayra Ruiz have always prioritized ingraining the same values into their own 3 children.
His father is a strong-minded, hardworking, and smart individual with a unique and awe-inspiring story. He grew up in Cuba and lost both of his parents while he was a teenager and at one point, even found himself homeless with nowhere to go. In 1966, with little schooling and barely any money, he decided to migrate with his wife from Cuba to Spain and eventually to the US for a chance at a better life for him and his family. It was in Spain that John, the youngest of the three, was conceived.
“Both of my parents have always inspired me. My dad because he is a very strong individual, with a super strong mind, and a very hard worker. He is extremely smart. Not only is he smart but he is also “life lesson” smart because of all he has been through. My mother was one of the most loving people I’ve known, she taught me how to not be selfish, to help others, and to give back. So, I would say that I was blessed with two amazing parents”

In the US, his father taught himself math, and to read and write English with the help of Reader’s Digest. He had multiple jobs and gained several skills along the way. Ruiz carries his legacy and work ethic into his own life daily and encourages his kids to do the same.
Ruiz has two sons and one daughter, all of whom are involved with him in the Cigarette Racing part of the family businesses.

John H. Ruiz as a mentor for athletes through LifeWallet NIL deals
John H. Ruiz has monumental achievements as an attorney, too many to name here but more recently he has become a life-transforming mentor. To tell you about his “mentor” side we need to go into some more amazing details about Mr. Ruiz.
Johns’ baby is MSP Recovery, a Medicare, Medicaid, commercial, and secondary payment reimbursement recovery leader that has disrupted the obsolete healthcare reimbursement system since 2014. It has succeeded in replacing old and outdated systems with data driven solutions to secure recoveries against those responsible.
In January 2022, MSP Recovery launched the product LifeWallet. LifeWallet is an app you download that empowers one to keep all their medical records in one place. This provides a birds-eye view of one’s actual health situation to any emergency medical responder that may need to access it in case of an emergency.
On June 30, 2021, the NCAA approved a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rule now making it possible for all NCAA D1, D2 and D3 student-athletes to be compensated for their NIL as of July 1, 2021, regardless of whether their state has a NIL law in place or not. John and his three children who have all attended the University of Miami have always been very involved in the support of the school.
Through NIL deals initiated at the University of Miami with athletes, John basically mentors, supports, teaches these kids to become more well-rounded individuals, but most important to develop their business-savvy skills.
These NIL deals are more than just an exchange of money and promotion for these athletic influencers. As a part of these deals, he basically takes these athletes under his and his teams’ wing and helps develop them so they can do many things they don’t learn on the field. For example, navigate contracts, file taxes, learn how to sell and brand themselves better. They benefit from marketing resources they otherwise would have to invest in, and they also get to influence the world to take better control of their health through the LifeWallet app.
Branding their social platform with LifeWallet and empowering them so they can better promote the life changing app is all part of the deal. Many people think this is all about money for John or about promoting his brands but it’s clearly a lot more than that. I mean it’s not like John needs any more money…
“FREE TIME is one thing you CAN have too much of ”
John H. Ruiz
Why, what he does is so important
Having lived in Miami his whole life he knows what a huge problem drugs and alcohol are in this city. Having too much time on your hands can be a problem if you are a kid so this is his way of fostering the good habits that are ingrained in these athletes. Through these opportunities they are be able to apply the same diligence they do on the field or the court to their own personal life and to business in general. But not just that, to be able to show them how to present and brand themselves better so they become highly sought-after for endorsements and sponsorships well into their professional future.
His NIL deals and the financial support he provides to his clients aims to teach them how to dress, communicate, build confidence, and be model citizens. But mostly importantly, these athletes learn how to occupy their free time by having their passion for sports fostered by someone who clearly knows what it takes to succeed. These important skills enable athletes to become better individuals and build their career. He sets these young minds on a life track filled with growth and success.
